Success again.
As a psychotherapist with 30 years experience, who works with couples, I consider this book to be one of the best for therapists of all levels of training. My colleagues and I agree that the best way to use this book is to savor its contents, digesting the lessons slowly, perhaps even reading sections to clients. Welwood is a gifted writer, centered in his psychospiritual approach without ...

Extraordindarily Enligntening!
"Spirituality is completely ordinary. Though we might speak of it as extraordinary, it is the most ordinary thing of all. Spirituality is simply a means of arousing one's spirit, of developing a kind of spiritedness. Through that we begin to have greater contact with reality. If we open our eyes, if we open our minds, if we open our hearts, we will find that this world is a magical place. ...

More intellectual than John Welwood's more popular books on relationship
TOWARD A PSYCHOLOGY OF AWAKENING is a dense book that describes the path of spiritual transformation from both an Eastern and Western perspective. Its primary value lies in trying to synthesize these two ways of looking at reality and describes in detail how each path informs the other. Many paradigms both East and West aren't necessarily integrative for many modern people. This book is an ...

Great sensible book for facing modern relationship dilemmas
I have read this book several times and never cease to come away with a new understanding. It has depth, compassion and useful information for moving through some of the modern relationship dilemmas that cause so many of us suffering. John Welwood is a Ph.D. psychotherapist with a deep knowledge of world religions, especially Buddhism. He also has a lot of life experience and has written many ...

Simply amazing.
This is probably one of the best, if not the best book I have read about that huge topic of LOVE. Among all the books dealing with this topic, this one stands out because of the depth of its explanation and the poetry of its wording. Welwood suggests that love is not simply a pure physical attraction. It could lift lovers to another level: the discovery of oneself. Love, according to the ...

A wonderful overview of a holistic counseling approach
AWAKENING THE HEART is a classic introduction to the contrast between eastern and western perspectives on the mind and counseling. It is an edited collection of essays on meditation, self-awareness, humility, and the interaction between "patient" and "counselor" - indicating that the counselor is affected by the process, as is the patient. It was a good book for me when I was early in my ...

Absorbing reading
This is a reader that John Welwood compiled when writing his excellent 'Journey of the Heart'. As he says, helpful writings on relationships are relatively rare, and I found this collection most absorbing. Sometimes successive authors have messages that seem to contradict each other, and yet each has something helpful to say and I find myself agreeing with both! D H Lawrence is as Welwood ...

Excellent content, Silly Giggling.
The author's excellent command of the material makes this a worthwhile purchase. However, the delivery lacks a lot to be desired. His constant giggling is really quite annoying. Humor adds to a presentation, but laughing at one's own jokes every few seconds gets old fast.
