What Did the Declaration Declare? (Historians at Work) 2 reviews Joseph J. Ellis
Bedford/St. Martin's, 1999
Educational and insightful One great thing about this book is that the original draft by Thomas Jefferson is included. One can easily compare and contrast what Jefferson wrote to the document that was signed by the men who created treason on July 4, 1776.
The articles written after the documents are very interesting and can get one thinking about many different aspects of the Declaration of Independece.
Very good ...

American Creation 56 reviews
Knopf, 2007
brilliant as usual I have read so much about this time period that only Joseph Ellis will give me an excuse to once again read about early US history.
The problem with most popular historic studies is that it tends to be littered with the adjectives of "brave, bold, noble, patriotic, heroic, etc." and therefore eliminates the objective analysis that provokes examination of the situation. Ellis examined ...

American Sphinx 136 reviews
Knopf Group E-Books, 1998
`He did not always speak exactly as he felt either towards his friends or his enemies.' I thoroughly enjoyed Professor Ellis's book about that enigmatic man: Thomas Jefferson. It is not a biography of Jefferson nor is it a complete history and those of us who want to know more about this period in American history will need to look to other sources.
For me, the value of this book is the articulation of some of the perceived contradictions between Jefferson's idealism and his ...

His Excellency 219 reviews Joseph J. Ellis
Faber & Faber Ltd, 2005
Excellent Some have wanted to reserve 5 stars to a "War and Peace" type book. To me 5 stars means the book did what it set out to do and did it well. "His Excellency" indeed did. It is an excellent short biography of the father of our country. When I picked this book up, I realized all I knew about Washington was what I had been taught in grade school.
Ellis is an excellent biographer who delves into ...

Passionate Sage 32 reviews Joseph J. Ellis
Blackstone Audiobooks, 1995
John Adams Redeemed This book by Joseph Ellis covers the post-presidential years of John Adam. It discusses his renewed correspondence with Thomas Jefferson after many years of silence because of partisan politics. It reveals a picture of a brillant but misunderstood founding father who Ellis calls "the voice of the Revolution" and Jefferson "the pen of the Revolution." A well-written and insightful book! A must ...

Founding Brothers 384 reviews Joseph J. Ellis
Recorded Books, 2001
I learned something new about a familiar subject Even though I'd seen and heard multiple items about the founding generation, I was pleasantly surprised that I learned something new from this work...namely that the discussion of the location of the new capital was seriously sidetracked by an abolitionist delegation's visit (which was even blessed by fellow abolitionist Ben Franklin shortly before his death). Highly Recommended, a great yarn.

My Dearest Friend: Letters of Abigail and John Adams 12 reviews Abigail Adams, John Adams
Belknap Press, 2007
My Dearest Friend~Letters from John Adams to his wife Abbigail If you are a history buff or just a little interested in the history of our nation you will love this book. The letters exchanged between John and Abigail Adams are wonderful. Abigail was definitely John's rock. She kept him focused and steady. John was a very passionate man in his beliefs and at times would become a tyrant trying to convince people that his way of thnking was the only way to ...

After the Revolution: Profiles of Early American Culture 1 review Joseph J. Ellis
W. W. Norton & Company, 1981
Interesting, but...... This book was published in 1979, so Mr. Ellis doesn't have the same writing style as he does in "His Excellency" and "American Sphinx." If you can get past the tortuous Preface (or better yet, skip it) and the two boring and uninteresting introductory chapters, the four individual chapters highlighting Charles Willson Peale, Hugh Henry Brackenridge, Wiliam Dunlap and Noah Webster are very ...
