Who Built America? Working People and the Nation's Economy, Politics, Culture, and Society, Vol. 2: From the ...5 reviews
American Social History Project, Joshua Freeman, ...

Pantheon, 1992

An excellent resource
When I saw this book, I bought it straightaway, because labor history gets short-shrift in American society. I'm sorry to see it's out-of-stock, but am unsurprised. While this book is fairly mainstream in its orientation, it is very readable and thorough, covering the struggle of working people through the late 1800s to the early 1990s. I consider this book a good starting point for people ...

The Rise and Fall of the House of Barneys: A Family Tale of Chutzpah, Glory, and Greed9 reviews
Joshua Levine

William Morrow & Company, 1999

A Cautionary Tale for Expansionist Managements
It seems everyone talks to Levine because as Barney Pressman once told Fred, "The Pressmans have no friends." What emerges is not only a morality play but also a case study on how not to raise your children and how not to expand your business. Hubris is a horrible thing. Time and again though during this decade, with Wall Street money plentiful, retail managements successful in one locale ...

Associations and Democracy (The Real Utopias Project, V. 1)
Joel Rogers, Paul Q. Hirst, ...

Verso, 1995

Throughout the West, democracy is under fire. "Government is part of the problem, not the solution" is a common refrain. As the tasks of the state become more complex and the size of polities larger, the institutional forms of liberal democracy developed in the 19th century seem increasingly unable to cope. Rather than seeking to deepen the democratic character of politics, much energy in recent years has been directed as reducing the role of ...

Equal Shares: Making Market Socialism Work (Practical Utopias)1 review
John E. Roemer, Richard Arneson, ...

Verso, 1996

intellectually and societally challenging
This book requires true open-mindedness and personal questioning. If one ponders with reasonable sincerity about the growing poverty and the increasing gap between the rich and the poor, considering solutions - as opposed to socio-economic band-aids, perhaps this approach might be taken more seriously... albeit impractical for the capitalist societies. It should be more broadly read and debated ...
