The Master of all Desires30 reviews

Wonder blend of fact and fantasy
What a delightful blending of historical fact to fictional fancy. The story follows a well know historical triangle between Queen Catherine de Medici , her husband, King Henri II, and his lover, Diane de Poitiers. Then through in an elderly and cranky Nostradamus and you've got a funny and entertaining novel. It would appear that both Queen Catherine and Diane de Poitiers want to get their ...

In Pursuit of the Green Lion8 reviews

Delacorte Press, 1990

A MUST for anyone who loves historical English fiction
What a great story of a gutsy woman of the '90's -- except she lived in the 16th century! I especially enjoyed her encounters with her ghostly assistants. My favorite line from her dead husband: "I may be dead, but I'm not stupid!" This book has everything a great book needs: well-researched history, a little romance, suspense and a bit of humor.

Vision of Light, A42 reviews
Judith Reilly, Judith Merkle Riley

Delacorte Press, 1988

Readable and Re-readable
I remember first reading this in 1991, and I still have it on my bookshelf. It is a favorite because of an entertaining, interesting story told against the backdrop of 14th-century English history. There are deeper issues to the novel, like envy and justice. It wasn't just for Margaret to be considered a witch because some people envied her, she was just using her gift to help people. I did enjoy ...

The Water Devil: A Margaret of Ashbury Novel (Margaret of Ashbury Trilogy)14 reviews

A Gem of a Book
The Water Devil is another one of Judith Merkle Riley's wonderful medieval novels about Margaret of Ashbury. It is truly a gem of a book, colorful, descriptive, humorous, and completely fascinating. Margaret is such a wonderful character, feisty and intelligent and totally fearless. She has unusual healing powers (first revealed in A Vision of Light)and a fey quality that blurs the world of ...

The Serpent Garden: A Novel27 reviews

Three Rivers Press, 2008

Loved the Historical Fiction Novel with the Paranormal Touch!
The story opens with Susanna Dallet confessing it was her fate and her sins that caused her to fall into the world of the French court in 1514, all because she was trained to paint by her Flemish father, and was married to a painter, who wished to learn her father's secrets. In the beginning, three men unearth a box containing a manuscript and a demon. One of the three men is the woman's ...

In Pursuit of the Green Lion1 review
Judith Merkle Riley

New English Library Ltd, 1992

Not Riley's best, but still very good
In Pursuit of the Green Lion takes up where A Vision of Light, Riley's first novel, left off. After the death of Margaret's first husband, she marries Gregory and moves to his family home, where his overbearing father and fatuous brother irritate them both. Despite the inauspicious surroundings, Margaret and Gregory manage to fall in love. But as a knight, Gregory and his male relatives must ...
