Son of the Shadows76 reviews

Gorgeous!
Second book in the Sevenwaters trilogy. Sorcha and Hugh now have grown children of their own. Liadan is much like her mother, a healer who sees visions of the future. She looks forward to a peaceful, orderly life at Sevenwaters, but circumstances put her on a different and much more dangerous path. While on her way home from a neighboring village, Liadan is captured by a vicious band of ...

Best Juliet Marillier book yet
Juliet Marillier's The Well of Shades combines poetic writing with strong character development in this third installment of the Bridei Chronicles. The two main characters, Faolan and Eile, are among the most realistic characters Juliet has ever portrayed. Both of these characters share tragic pasts, but with the help of each other, work to overcome them. Juliet Marillier did an excellent job at ...

Everything You would want.
I Adored this book! It had everything I loved about it--especially philosophy, being attuned to nature and not fighting the current, but flowing with it, as well as the value of destiny. You can almost understand why many characters feel the way they do, and many of the actions they make are acceptable. It's written beautifully, just as Marillier is able to deliver. One thing that she seems to ...

The Compulsive Reader's Reviews
Deep within the shadowed and mysterious forests of Transylvania live five sisters; Tati, Jena, Iulia, Paula, and Stela. Each Full Moon the sisters slip through a secret portal into the Other World, where they dance the night away with the place's peculiar but inviting inhabitants. But back in their own world, the sisters' quiet lives are thrown wildly off course as their sickly merchant father ...

Book Two is... interesting?
I love ALL of Marillier's work, every time. I enjoy her style, her voice, the beautiful way she blends magic, history, and cultures is beyond belief. Book two in the Bridei chronicles was less than I expected, it seemed a bit of a different focus from first book. It was more about the personal feelings and romances of the characters than the larger events going on. Also, I really REALLY like a ...

Gorgeous fairy tale retelling
First book in the Sevenwaters trilogy. Marillier has crafted a gorgeous retelling of a Celtic fairytale. Lord Colum, an Irish widower, with six sons and a daughter, buries his grief at his beloved wife's death by throwing himself into fortifying his stronghold in order to withstand the endless attacks of the Britons. Finbar believes that his father is too harsh and decides to help a ...

Breathless.
Unlike the first book, I really like this book. Marrillier goes back to the perpective of a female. Magic and love are mixed together again. I absolutely loved this one.

Child of the Prophecy70 reviews

Tor Books, 2002

Perhaps the Best of the Trilogy--certainly the most ambiguous and complex!
I always find ranking the books in this trilogy hard, as they're all so good--usually it comes between the enchanting fairy-tale-like first book, Daughter of the Forest, and this one however (I like the second one as well, but it just didn't grip me quite as much as the others, and Liadan is my least favorite protagonist). Personally Fainne is my favorite heroine of the trilogy, the one I ...

Another Gem From Marillier
After the first two I doubted this series could get any more brilliant, but the Well of Shades proved me wrong, as she brought the already fabulous story soaring to new heights in this book. All I can say is bring on Book 4.

Fine piece of historical literature
This book is one of the most interesting books of historical literature I have read in a long time. I really enjoy the characters and the plot keeps you guessing. It's not always a happy book, and you don't always like what happens, but it makes you keep wanting to read on. I really enjoy this author's work!
