Phoenix Rising67 reviews
Karen Hesse

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 1994

Beautifully written!
Phoenix Rising is a beautifully written book that kids from grades 4-9 would enjoy. I loved the descriptions of the changing of the seasons in New England, where the story takes place. I also liked to see how the main character, Nyle, changed from the fall to the spring. This book is sad at times, and really makes you think about the consequences of nuclear power.

Letters from Rifka83 reviews
Karen Hesse

Puffin, 1993

Inspiring story!
Written as a series of letters from Rifka to a cousin back in Russia, this book tells the story of a Jewish girl's tortured path of emigrating to the US. Rifka and her family leave Russia in 1919 after her brothers flee from the Russian army, where Jewish draftees are abused and often killed. Rifka is the only girl and is a key part of their escape, and then must call on even more resources when ...

Come On, Rain18 reviews
Karen Hesse

Scholastic Press, 1999

Lyrical picture book
This lyrical ode to the coming rain, accompanied by the soothing wash of lush watercolors, make Hesse's Come on, Rain! sure to please young children. In prose that reads like poetry, young Tessie bemoans the heat of summer while waiting with confidence that rain will soon come. Along with her multicultural friends and all their mammas, Tessie dances in gratitude for the refreshing wetness the ...

Or how cats became heroes
Once upon a time in a far away place, there lived a bad man, a very bad man. In fact this man was so good at being bad that he convinced the people of his country that he was a good man. Not only that, he convinced them he was the man for the job, the job of leading their government. So he did. Then he convinced his people that there were enemies living right there in their country and they ...

The Music of Dolphins111 reviews
Karen Hesse

Scholastic Paperbacks, 1998

Sociological Literature for Young People
I am writing this as a reply to the review entitled "OMG THIS BOOK WAS HORRIBLE." This novel is not about it being a "true" story, which it isn't, but about the development of language and social communication and interaction. An example case relative to Mila's predicament would be the case of Isabelle, who was discovered when she was 6 years old in a dark room, where her family kept her ...

It's a great book about a boy named Nicholas who stows away on Captain Cook's ship to escape from an abusive father. They are going on a three year voyage to find new and undiscovered land at the bottom of the Earth. I think that everyone who likes adventurous books should read this book because ...

WITNESS
In discussing the subject of Hate with my eighth grade students, I use WITNESS as an introduction to this difficult topic because of its brilliant subtleties that infuse the subject with multiple perspectives that tells a complete story. Highly reminiscent of the adult play THE LARAMIE PROJECT (which tells the story of Matthew Shepherd -- the young gay man who died after being beaten to death ...

Just Juice (Scholastic Signature)12 reviews
Karen Hesse

Scholastic Paperbacks, 1999

A Moving Experience
I used this book as a read aloud with my third grade class in New York City. A few of the children have been struggling with reading since they began school, and I felt that those students might connect with the main character in some way, shape, or form. I was not prepared for the profound impact this book would have on all of my students. As a class, they were moved to tears towards the end ...

Aleutian Sparrow13 reviews

Aladdin, 2005

"For Their Own Protection"
I did not set out this morning to read or to review Karen Hesse's ALEUTIAN SPARROW, but one of my wife's faculty colleagues at the university had lent it to her, and, when she told me that the setting focused on the Aleutian Islands and Ketchikan, I knew I had to look at it, too. Once I began, I found myself unable to pause until I had passed the last page, the author's end note, and the dust ...

A Time of Angels18 reviews
Karen Hesse

Hyperion Book CH, 1997

Amazing, engaging, imaginative ... must read!
I was frankly shocked to read reviews that found this book boring. I've read all of Karen Hesse's works, and find this to be far and away the best. I am a fifth grade teacher, and can usually count on my 14-year-old daughter to let me take her cast-off books to supply my classroom; this was one that she won't part with, even after several years. "A Time of Angels" is high on my list of books to ...

In this intimate and ...
