Black Seconds (Inspector Sejer Mysteries)5 reviews
Karin Fossum

Harcourt, 2008

Compelling
Henning Mankell introduced me to the wonders of Scandinavian crime writing, and led me to Karin Fossum, who is even better at it than our venerable Swedish friend. She's a little bit different in approach though: Mankell, who we all know, sticks, in his Wallander books at least, to the police procedural style. Perhaps that's his weakness. Fossum takes some elements of the procedural and mixes ...

The Indian Bride (Inspector Sejer Mysteries)18 reviews

Maybe the best mystery I've read & among the best books
I'm an English major/English teacher sort of person, and even a would-be writer. I used to think I could write pretty well, but I have the growing and strong perception that there are people out there who write better than me for sure, and maybe than some of the "greats" that we all read ("red") years ago and even read ("reed") in school now. There's no better example than the Indian Bride. It's ...

Calling Out for You1 review

VINTAGE (RAND), 2006

Alternate Title for The Indian Bride
This is a previous release of The Indian Bride, which I loved. Everything I've read of Fossum's is great.

HE WHO FEARS THE WOLF (INSPECTOR SEJER MYSTERY S.)18 reviews
FELICITY DAVID (TRANSLATOR) KARIN FOSSUM

THE HARVILL PRESS, 2003

Fascinating Exploration of Madness
There are moments in this book when you have to set it down and think about what just happened. Not because it's complex, but because you need to digest some of the observations about life and people. That is one of the reasons that I enjoy Fossum's work - it's not just another detective mystery story. The way she evokes unique sympathy for each of her characters; the endings that seem more ...

Calling Out For You2 reviews
Karin Fossum

The Harvill Press, 2005

Move over Mankell?
You can't help comparing Karin Fossum and Henning Mankell. They're both Scandinavian writers of police procedurals, and both have a strong central detective character - Sejer in Fossum's case and Wallander for Mankell. Mankell's Wallander is arguably more famous, and inspires people to make the pilgrimage to Ystad in Sweden. Karin Fossum hasn't rooted her novels quite so explicitly, but this one ...

Broken1 review
Karin Fossum

Harvill Secker, 2008

Unusual psychological thriller
If you're a fan of Fossum's Konrad Sejer detective series, you might feel a bit disappointed that her latest novel `Broken' isn't part of the series but something rather different. You might even, having read the synopsis, imagine that this isn't going to be for you. It sounds a bit odd, doesn't it? One of her characters comes into her bedroom and talks to her. I admit I wasn't sure this was ...

When the Devil Holds the Candle (Inspector Sejer Mysteries)14 reviews
Karin Fossum

Harvest Books, 2007

Wow! what a scary story!
This is the 3rd or 4th book that I've read by Karin Fossum and I was truly creeped out by this one. Being of Norwegian decent, I love that a Norwegian woman wrote this. I guess that I shouldn't be surprised, but I didn't know she was out there and I love it! Read it if you love suspense and mysery.

Don't Look Back (An Inspector Sejer mystery)23 reviews
Karin Fossum

Vintage, 2003

Superb writing
Characters that are real, not forced or overdrawn. Plot development that is believable and deceiving, with a style that smoothly involves the reader mentally, laying clues that may be clues or not, always with unexpected plot finishes that are satisfying. Read one of her books and you immediately want to start another. A detective mystery writer of the highest order. If you haven't read any ...
