The Tiger Rising 78 reviews Kate Dicamillo
Candlewick, 2002
Quality Literature I started off by reading this little jewel to my second grade daughter. Before long, I found myself reading this by myself until the very end. I simply could not put it down! The next day I purchased book group copies for my eighth grade classroom. Di Camillo's writing is eloquent and engaging and her characters leap off the page as you find yourself pulled into their struggles. The Tiger ...

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane 219 reviews Kate Dicamillo
Candlewick, 2007
Charming, heart breaking, and beautiful... I just put this book down. It was absolutely beautiful.
I warn you, though, this story is probably not for the sensitive (as demonstrated by the negative responses). Still, I think this is an important story for the overindulged, entitled generations that we are raising. It is about love, and appreciation, and loss, and need. The characters are very real and have qualities in people that we ...

The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread (Tale of ... 365 reviews Kate Dicamillo
Candlewick, 2003
Teachers, This is a must for your classroom this year. Since Disney is planning to have this book come out as a movie in December, it is the perfect time to read this book in class. Then the class could go on a field trip to see the movie for a Christmas treat.
I love how the book talks to the "reader" and teaches vocabulary while telling the story. Great for schools.

Because of Winn-Dixie 6 reviews KATE DICAMILLO
Scholastic, 2000
A great book that everyone can relate too! Because of Winn Dixie is one of the best books I have ever read. I can relate to the characters in this story. The story is about a girl who moves to Naomi, Florida with her father who is a preacher. The girl's name is Opal and she makes a trustworthy friend at the Winn Dixie supermarket. Her friend is a stray dog who smiles showing all of his teeth and she decides to name him Winn Dixie.

Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken Kate Dicamillo
Joanna Cotler, 2008
She longed for adventure. So she left her home and ventured out into the wide world. The pleasures and perils she met proved plentiful: marauding pirates on the majestic seas, a ferocious lion under the bright lights of the big top, a mysterious stranger in an exotic and bustling bazaar. Yet in the face of such daunting danger, our heroine . . . She was brave. She was fearless. She was feathered. She was a chicken. A ...

Mercy Watson to the Rescue (Mercy Watson) 18 reviews Kate Dicamillo
Candlewick, 2005
Great beginning chapter book My niece was not inspired by any chapter books. The clerk at a local bookstore recommended this series and BAM!--the niece was hooked. My only question is: can Kate DiCamillo write these fast enough to satisfy a book-hungry seven-year-old?
This is also a great book to read out loud. The characters and humor jump off the page, even when a non-actor such as myself attempts to "do voices."

Mercy Watson: Three-Treat Collection: Slipcased Gift Set (Mercy Watson) 3 reviews Kate Dicamillo
Candlewick, 2007
This is a great set for 4+ year olds Very cute set of stories about a couple who have a "pet" pig named Mercy who they treat like their child. Great illustrations and fun story line. My 4-1/2 year old son just got these for Christmas and loves them. The illustrator has done some other books that are excellent ("If I Built a Car") which I also highly recommend. This gift set is hard back and of very nice quality.
