A pleasure to read!
Rich in historiography as well as history. An excellent resource for any US History teacher or student. Information is easy to find, the bibliography is extensive and the annotations are informative. All of this and I looked forward to reading each page!

Beautiful pictures, beautifully captioned
This is a marvelous and moving selection of visual moments, carefully chosen and elegantly captioned. It is refreshingly free of the stuffily convoluted prose one would expect of a book from an academic press. Although the pictures could be said to speak for themselves (and sometimes they can), the information supplied by the gracefully literate writer(s) is helpful and interesting. Groups of ...

Useful, but smugness is overwhelming
The author's smugness is nauseating. It it distracting to try to read about travel destinations only to have the author go on and on about how extreemly wonderful and superior the "Victorians" are. On the other hand, this book has an immense amount of info, including history and culture as well as basic travel info. I am happy to see rough price estimates for the restaurants which is very ...

M.F.K. Fisher, Kathleen Hill's friend and colleague, gave Kathleen the standard good advice: that she write about what she knows. For Kathleen, that meant the good life. Her background was in culinary arts, and her husband, Gerald, was experienced in travel and history writing. Together, they've taken on the Monterey and Carmel region in this delightful guide--introducing an area of sumptuous beauty, incomparable wineries, superior shopping, ...

Truly a book that will change (and extend) your life!
Having had a chance to read an advance copy of "The Calcium Lie," I can say that the ideas contained in this book truly changed the way that I look at a number of important aspects of my health -- nutrition, vitamins, and the way I listen to the well-intentioned advice of "the medical establishment." After reading "The Calcium Lie" it is very clear to me that when it comes to the amount of ...

A novel by Kathleen Thompson Norris, who was an American novelist, and wife of fellow writer, Charles Norris whom she wed in 1909. She was educated in a special course in the University of California and wrote many popular romance novels that some considered sentimental and honest in their prose. Norris was the highest-paid female writer of her time, and many of her novels are held in high regard today. Many of her novels were set in California, ...

WHAT A FUN, INFORMATIVE BOOK!
While my husband and I were browsing at our favorite bookstore, we discussed where we should travel next. We both love wine, so we thought maybe a wine tasting tour would be next. As San Franciscans, we visit the Sonoma and Napa valleys often, but we wanted to go somewhere different. We have used the Hills' guides to Sonoma and Napa in the past so we asked the book store clerk to suggest ...

"Sonoma Valley..." an essential read for the Sonoma bound.
Written by two longtime residents of the area, "Sonoma Valley the Secret Wine Country," is not only an indispensable guide for those planning a trip to the Sonoma Valley, it is also a great read for the "armchair adventurer" simply wishing to learn more about Sonoma's unique history and culture. This is a travel guide that one wants to continue reading long after the trip is over. The ...

A welcomed correction
Not EVERYman agrees with King's views of the situation. I may be in the minority, but I fully agree with the findings of these Editors, basing my full agreement on the work of James Hillman, a genuine Champion of Soul, who aptly wrote that "Hades (I add Hekate, the Mother) is not a monster; the Ego is." But, not to worry, Stephanie Queen is not mocked :).

The book was a virtual tour in my mind's eye of Victoria.
The book was lots of fun to read. The descriptions of the city using the vantage point of a walker up and down the specified streets was brilliant. Even though my trip to Victoria fell through, I can pick up the book and almost hear, smell and see this fascinating place I hope to visit someday.
