CACTI: THE ILLUSTRATED DICTIONARY
SUPERB COMPACT REVIEW OF A VERY BROAD SPECTRUM OF CACTI TO HELP ANY SERIOUS AFFICIONADO OF THESE CRITTERS. ALPHABETICALLY ARRANGED, GOOD PICTURES OF EACH BASIC GROUP WITH CLEAR CONCISE DESCRIPTIONS. I WOULD SAY THIS IS A MUST IN THE LIBRARY OF ANY CACTUS LOVER.

Primates of the World1 review
Rod Preston-Mafham, Ken Preston-Mafham

Blandford, 1999

Wonderful Book!!
Lots of information and the largest collection of pictures of primates I've ever seen in one source. Has Prosimians, New World Monkey and Old World Monkeys. This book discusses the differences and similarities of all the groups and uses illustrations to show anatomical differences. Great book in a great series. I bought this for a primate class in school and it was the best book I've ever bought!

Natural World of Bugs & Insects4 reviews
Ken & Rod Preston-Mafham

PRC, 2000

A book for illustrator student
I wanted to add my 2 cents....I have been using it for the purpose of finding material to illustrate. And also as a bug enthusiast, it's been a very good book for seeing the most beautiful and weirdest bugs ever. As someone commented here, the pictures are very beautiful and high quality. AND HUGE. The book is a sight for sore eyes. :) Amazing colors...an illustrator student's heaven. So, my star ...

Spiders of the World (Of the World Series)3 reviews
Rod Preston-Mafham, Ken Preston-Mafham

Facts on File, 1984

This is a nice book
This is just a nice book. It has some fascinating information about the structure, biology, and life history of spiders. It has some very nice pictures, especially of jumping spiders which the authors seem to have a special affinity for. It is NOT a field guide, and it's not meant to be, it's a very nice introduction to the fascinating world of the spider.

Cacti and Succulents in Habitat1 review
Ken Preston-Mafham

Cassell, 1995

Excellent photography and accessible text
The author sets out to show how easy it is to find cacti and succulents in their natural habitat, in addition to illustrating the variation in appearance within many species of cacti. The latter he explains is the reason why so many names have disappeared in recent years as they have been absorbed as synonyms of earlier named species. Based on his own travels through Bolivia; South-West United ...

ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF LAND INVERTEBRATE BEHAVIOUR1 review
KEN PRESTON-MAFHAM, ALLAN ROLLASON (ILLUSTRATOR) ROD PRESTON-MAFHAM

BLANDFORD PRESS, 1993

A complete work.
This is a book which appears to describe all there is to describe as far as Land Invertebrate behaviour is concerned. It is well written, easy to follow and supported by photographs of a very high quality throughout. Whilst my own forte is underwater photography closely followed by high-speed natural history photography, I must confess there are times when I get down (and usually get very ...

The Natural History of Spiders1 review
Ken Preston-Mafham, Rod Preston-Mafham

Crowood Press (UK), 1997

A carefully written introduction
If you are interested in spiders and can obtain a copy of this book, you should. The Preston-Mafhams have written and illustrated a number of very creative and interesting books on the subject of terrestrial arthropods, and this is one of the best. I am familiar with much of the science behind their text, and can assure you that they have done their homework on this one. They cover a broad ...

500 Cacti: Species and Varieties in Cultivation2 reviews
Ken Preston-Mafham

Firefly Books, 2007

A VERY HANDY BOOK TO HAVE AROUND.
This is quite an impressive little book. As the title tells us, it addresses 500 cacti. Now no book can cover them all. There are thousands of cacti genus out there. This work though goes along way in giving good information to the amature collector, grower, or in my case, photographer of these wonderful plants. The book is set up alphabetically by genus, but the wonderful photographs are ...

Identifying Spiders: The New Compact Study Guide and Identifier (Identifying Guide Series)1 review
Ken Preston-Mafham

Chartwell Books, 1998

Excellent information on a relatively few species
Excellent photographs and concise descriptions of appearance and habitat for each species covered; unfortunately, there are significant gaps in the species list. Written with an emphasis on European species, with some specialty North American and Asian species also included.

Bugs, Beetles, Spiders, & Snakes (Complete Identifier)1 review
Ken Preston-Mafham, Nigel Marven, ...

Book Sales, 2004

Bugs, Beetles, siders, snakes
The pictures are great, but that's about the only positive comment I can make about this book. It's main purpose is to identify bugs and snakes, it certainly could not be used as a reference for school reports etc. My main problem is about a third or more of the "critters" listed do not reside in the US, so unless I plan on traveling to South America anytime soon, this book is not very useful ...

500 Butterflies: From Around the World1 review
Ken Preston-Mafham

Firefly Books, 2007

A Huge Disappointment
I looked forward to this new book of butterfly pictures and was most disappointed in it. If you know anything at all about butterflies then I would suggest NOT buying this book. The size is approximately 6 by 6 1/2 inches. The pictures are of reasonable size but I would suggest 30% to 40% of the pictures are of the butterflies with their wings folded!!! Anyone familiar with butterflies ...
