Identify Yourself: The 50 Most Common Birding Identification Challenges9 reviews
Bill Thompson III

Houghton Mifflin, 2005

Identify Yourself
I've been looking for a book like this for a while. I highly recommend it to anyone that needs a little bird identification help and is confused on similar looking species. It offers many useful tips and a lot of great advice. This is not the book, however, if you're looking to identify flycatchers or specific shorebirds. Besides that, though, this is a fantastic book.

Butterflies of North America (Kaufman Focus Guides)18 reviews
Jim P. Brock, Kenn Kaufman

Houghton Mifflin, 2003

butterfly watching
Although it is thick and a hefty 392 pages, I take it along on our rv jaunts around the states. My wife is a big Petersons guide to birds fan so our binoculars are always on the ready. The illustrations are quality. I'd been using Petersons Butterflies but now only refer to this. For the money it's a good buy and good reference. Unless you want it real fast, buy it here on Amazon for the ...

Guia de Campo Kaufman: a las Aves Norteamericanas (Kaufman Field Guides)3 reviews
Kenn Kaufman

Houghton Mifflin, 2005

¡Por Fin! Las Aves en español
Kenn Kaufman has done it again, taking bird guides and birding to new heights by creating a field guide for Spanish-speaking audiences in the United States and abroad. For English speaking birders, having the names of all the birds in Spanish is a great resource, but translations of the introductory material on birding, bird plumage topography, identification, and conservation are also ...

Lives of North American Birds6 reviews
Kenn Kaufman

Houghton Mifflin, 2001

Excellent!!
Great book to have onhand. I also have Sibley's book, The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior and I love them both - they're very different and while they may overlap to some degree, they're definitely different. Lives of N. Amer. Birds has great photographs of the birds, each bird entry has an intro paragragh about the bird, then is followed by habitat they prefer/can be found in, Feeding ...

Kaufman Field Guide to Mammals of North America1 review
Kenn Kaufman, Rick Bowers, ...

Houghton Mifflin, 2007

a very good reference
The field Guide to Mammals of North America is a very good reference. Clear pictures, good descriptions. I have included it in our office's Master Gardener library. Now everyone will know the difference between a mole, a vole, and a shrew.

Flights Against the Sunset: Stories that Reunited a Mother and Son2 reviews
Kenn Kaufman

Houghton Mifflin, 2008

What twelve books would you choose??
First, this isn't a book about birding. Well, of course it is--but it really isn't. This is one of those rare books that belong among the dozen or so works of literature that define our lives. It's a book for your children, a gift of remembrance. Easy and enjoyable, the book weaves an account of Kenn's youthful obsession with birding, his coming of age, and a profound and insightful ...

Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America (Kaufman Field Guides)20 reviews
Kenn Kaufman, Eric R. Eaton

Houghton Mifflin, 2007

A Grown-Up Golden Guide!
I think this book is perfect. It has just enough of everything so that the book is affordable and light enough to really be a FIELD guide. The pictures are terrific...there are just enough on a page so your eye can easily scan when you are looking for a particular insect. This guide has about 400 pages and more than 2,350 images so OF COURSE it isn't going to have lots of details about every ...

Kingbird Highway: The Biggest Year in the Life of an Extreme Birder22 reviews
Kenn Kaufman

Houghton Mifflin, 2006

Read this and take a yearlong journey into the great outdoors
As a birder, I empathized with Kaufman's desire to see rare birds in Aleutians, explore the unknown, and experience the American wilderness through the binocular lens. For those of us who might be apprehensive about dropping out of high school and hitchhiking around the country pursuing our dreams, Kaufman makes it easy. He does it for us. This is the story of a young kid who was obsessed ...

A Field Guide to Advanced Birding: Birding Challenges and How to Approach Them (Peterson Field Guides (R))5 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 1999

Want to improve your identification skills? Get this book.
This book is appropriate for anyone who wants to improve his bird identification skills, whether he is already "advanced" or not. Kaufman does an excellent job detailing how to go about identifying birds in many problem groups, such as accipiters, dowitchers, and fall warblers. In some cases the information amounts to helpful hints that will make identification a little easier (did you know ...

More Tales of a Low-Rent Birder
Pete Dunne

University of Texas Press, 1994

". . . as the birding community has grown, the gulf between what the beginner knows and what the expert knows has also grown wider and wider. That's one of the reasons why Pete Dunne's writings are so valuable. Pete is undeniably a top birder, but he writes most of his material for people who are not. . . . In Dunne's birding world, shared interest is the only coin of the realm, and even the rank novice is greeted with respect." ?from the ...

Finding Butterflies in Arizona: A Guide to the Best Sites4 reviews
Richard Bailowitz

Johnson Books, 2007

It worked for us
We used this book on a recent butterfly adventure in the White Mts. and thanks partly to this guide, we had great sucess. For example, the book states that Riding's Satyr could be found on the south side of Luna Lake in late June. We got out of car on the south side and we had walked only 30 yards and, BINGO!, we had that cryptic creature.

Kaufman Focus Guide to Mammals of North America (Kaufman Focus Guides)4 reviews
Kenn Kaufman, Rick Bowers, ...

Houghton Mifflin, 2004

The new standard for North American mammal field guides
This is an excellent book and is a worthy addition to the collection of all naturalists, mammalogists, and people interested in nature. Photos don't always work as well as illustrations in field guides but the Kaufman Focus Guides have rectified this situation by digital manipulation of the photos. Some larger species (whales, porpoises, and dolphins) are illustrated but also include photos. ...

The Little Big Book of Birds3 reviews

Welcome Books, 2007

Beautiful Book!
I first saw this book in Barnes and Noble and of course wrote it down and went home to order it from Amazon....I love birds but I am in no way a professional anything when it comes to birds-I just love to feed them in my backyard and see how many different kinds come everyday. This book is worth the price of admission for the beautiful artwork alone-not to mention the poetry and useful ...

The Guide to Kansas Birds and Birding Hot Spots3 reviews
Bob Gress, Pete Janzen

University Press of Kansas, 2008

Great for beginners and experts
A fine gem, summarizing the birds most likely to be seen in Kansas. Each bird gets a full page with photo and helpful information like how to recognize them, where to find them, and when to find them. The photos are excellent! New birders will quickly find a species without sorting through the clutter of a larger field guide. Experienced birders may glean details such as where and when to find ...
