Beautiful paintings embellish a spirited story!
Good reading skills or parental read-aloud assistance will be required for this chapter from Grahme's classic Wind In The Willows: it tells of friendship and a holiday homecoming as Mole transforms Mole End to a haven of earth and cheer. Hague's beautiful paintings embellish the spirited story.

A rare gem indeed
If you are picking up this book, you most likely have read its companion, THE GOLDEN AGE. This book continues the exploits of the children introduced in the first volume. Veddy, veddy English. Completely delightful, though. I am not sure today's children would enjoy this book. The 19th Century British-isms will probably be quite tedious to any but the most precocious of children. And nothing ...

Will Always Remember
I read this book over ten years ago, when I was about nine, but the emotions I felt while reading it are still fresh in my mind. This is an excellent read, at any age. It's fun, sad, silly, and adventurous. I will never forget it.

Wag the Dog.
This delightful story tells the tale of a boy who meets a kindly dragon on the edge of town. The boy and the dragon become friends and start spending a lot of time together. Then the people of the town find out about the dragon and send for St. George. The boy meets with St. George and takes him to meet the dragon. Wind in the Willows on tape is terrfic!
My grandchildren and I listened to this while on a car trip, and we loved it. In fact, I wanted to listen even when they weren't in te car. hte writeup states that you might want to buy one for the children and another for yourself, and that's probably true. Very well done.

A Separate Peace
The original "St. George and the Dragon" story is a frightening tale. Depending on which version you read, the townspeople give the scaly, stinking, vicious, dragon tribute of two sheep per day, and, when they invariably run out of sheep, they begin feeding it their own children. The King is obviously horrified, but what can he do? However, when the lottery selects his own daughter, who should ...

Beautifully detailed illustrations. Wonderful stories.
Kenneth Grahame's stories of the friendship of Mole and Rat are fascinating portraits of human character traits. When reading these stories to my children, I would ask them which character they most identified with, or of whom did each story character remind them. For instance, Mole is a gentle, kind, sentimental and curious soul, though a little self-conscious. When he ventures away from ...

The Adventures of Mr. Toad
Mr. Toad loves to go fast - in his gypsy cart. Even in that, he runs up huge bills because he crashes into things and has to pay for them. While his friends lock him up and plot to try to keep him from losing Toad Hall to debts, Toad sneaks out and trades Toad Hall for a motorcar! When he's arrested for stealing it, everyone pitches in to help him out, even Cyril, his horse. For the ...

Bring back the old!
We've been fortunate enough to see a couple of the stories live on the stage at the Broward Center for Performing Arts, and my four year old loved it! I immediately went home and ordered him the books to keep his interest evolving. He loves these stories, and loves talking about his experience at the theater after reading them! The stories bring back memories from my childhood also, so I enjoy ...

"It takes all types to make a world."
"The Wind in the Willows" is an absolutely delightful animal tale. No one gets hurt (unless you want to count one small cut to the leg), and friends don't take advantage of one another. In these days of strife when we can all use some upcheer, this is a wonderful book to take one's mind off one's troubles. Mole meet Rat when he is out and about instead of spring-cleaning and Rat is boating. ...

K. Grahame Examines Childhood
Kenneth Grahame's rich, elegant writing make "The Golden Age" a joy to read and reread. While it is a story of children in late Victorian England, it is not a childish book. Rather, it is an examination of how children view the world and are confounded by the actions of the adults around them. Grahame had a wonderful knack for presenting the child's point of view without being cutesy or ...

Delightful Animal Idyll
This childhood favorite is as fresh and charming as when it was first published. The animal protagonists--Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad--remind us of folks we know, which endears them to us with their all-too-human dreams and foibles. For both Men and Creatures struggle to survive in the forest and streams of life. Exhausted from his strenuous spring cleaning, Mole sets out into the world ...

Best book ever
What can you say about this gorgeous book? Nothing could do it justice. It's a classic of English lyricism. It's something every child should be read, although the vocabulary can be challenging for children to read on their own. It's a book for the family to cherish. This version is nicely made with lovely illustrations. It belongs on the bookshelf between Alice In Wonderland and Winnie ...

The BEST of many versions of this children's classic
I was introduced to the denizens of the river when I was very small, about three or four. My edition was illustrated by Arthur Rackham, still the best and most definitive version to this day, IMHO (much as I love Ernest Shepherd's work, but I identify him with Pooh...) Arthur Rackham's illustrations are wonderfully detailed but not at all cute, which is the bane of most children's books. I ...

A Christmas Classic
It is our family's tradition to read Bertie's Escapade every Christmas Eve, before the children go to bed. This is done with much sharing of the marvelous illustrations. One of "Wind in the Willows" author Kenneth Grahame's creations, Bertie is a pig whose motto, "Deeds, not grunts" should offer inspiration to politicians everywhere. Scaling the palings of his sty, Bertie leads his companions, ...

A NICE RETELLING OF A WONDERFUL TALE.
This is a children's editon, for younger readers, of the old tale "Wind in the Willows." The author, Stacy Leach has actually done quite a nice job with this one. I usually do not like the retelling of classics such as this, but in this case the job was done quite well. The illustrations by Holly Hannon are first rate, as a matter of fact they are quite enjoyable. This is a great read along ...
