Stonefish1 review

teasing appetites for future stories
OK, I'm the author of this book. I gave it 4 stars because *nothing* I write will ever be perfection. If you're an honest objective fiction writer, the *next* book will always be better, but (unless you're really stupid or sociopathic) no work will ever rate unto perfection. This is a collection of short stories, some published (between 1985 and 1999) and some pristine. There are also poems - ...

*Perfection!*
This book defies the constraints of the written word and captures a tri-soul: a devastating, miraculous, chameleon-like story that will reach out and grab your psyche, changing you forever. Deeply psycho-empathetic, alchemical, and rich beyond anything you've ever read. A gem hiding under the literary rubble of ego's and forced structures. Hulme breaks the mold that binds us to repetitive ...

New Zealand Short Stories Fourth Series
Janet Frame, Keri Hulme, ...

OUP Australia and New Zealand, 1984

Spanning the decade from the mid-seventies, this selection explores the diverse directions New Zealand short fiction has taken since it left the realism of the farm in search of the surrealism of the modern city. This volume, including work by Owen Marshall, Shonagh Koea, Witi Ihimaera, and Keri Hulme, also reflects the emergence of women writers in recent years.

Bone People, the1 review

Dead or Not?!?
I enjoyed this book. It made me laugh a lot. Our main character is a funny, irreverant gal with deep problems. This book is written in a "stream of consciousness" style, so any random thoughts that pop into her head are there for you to read. Though the plot is tragic, I found a lot of humour in the delivery, which was needed. Our book club could not decide if they were all dead or alive at ...

Profoundly confusing
This is a book with several stories. I have read the book about three years ago. I borrowed it from a library, but never saw the book since. The stories still haunt me though. I still dream of the king bait and thinking about the sheep makes me laugh. Though other stories like the one with the kite still scare me. The stories are beautiful and shocking and above all they really confused me ...

Homeplaces1 review

Magical writing on mystical places
Keri Hulme's extraordinarily vivid writing brings to life three wild and beautiful places in the South Island of New Zealand. Whether or not the reader has ever visited Okarito, Moeraki or Rakiura, the text makes them real, so that you can feel the surge of the wild West Coast surf, smell the kelp, see the grains of sand amidst the foam on the beach, and hear the chiming songs of the birds in the ...

Strands
Keri Hulme

Oxford University Press, USA, 1992

This second collection of poems by the Booker Prize-winning author of The Bone People is made up of three parts. The first poem, "Fishing the Olearia Tree," is a rich and moving exploration of natural processes. "Against Small Evil Voices" is a collection of chants, stories, and memories full of Maori elements and focused primarily on the strength of the family and the courage of women. Finally, "Winesongs" is a selection of more casual lyrics, ...
