The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States14 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2005

A worthy companion
As the nation prepares to welcome the seventeenth Chief Justice, this book is a wonderful guide to the processes of the least 'media-exposed' branch of the federal government and its highest institution, the Supreme Court. This book has many handy features for researchers and general enthusiasts. There are brief biographies - personal, professional and judicial - of each of the Chief ...

Oxford University Press, USA, 2001

Oxford Guire to US Supreme Court Decisions
This is a handy reference to quickly correlate discussions of past decisions in the many articles on supreme court actions as well as during the confirmation process. It is a good book for every supreme court watcher to have on the shelf.

American Legal History: Cases and Materials2 reviews
Kermit L. Hall, Paul Finkelman, ...

Oxford University Press, USA, 2004

greatest hits of the law
This is a terrific book. I use it for teaching Law & Public Policy to political science masters students. The authors have done a great job winnowing the dusty tomes of legal history to the essential nuggets. In addition to the classics, they've selected some hilarious "voice of the people" sources one might never come across in standard legal history texts. I really enjoy this book!

Institutions of American Democracy: The Judicial Branch (Institutions of American Democracy Series)2 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2006

An excellent, thought provoking study of the Judiciary. Certainly not above the average American reader in scope or depth.
The 5 part Institutions of American Democracy series is a brilliant compilation of some of the best modern minds on the subjects they tackle. The Judicial Branch is no less a noteworthy contribution to the series. The essays that comprise the volume are both scholarly and focused, without being elitist or written beyond the scope of the average American reader. Given the typical American's ...

Chronicling American law from its English origins to the present, and offering for the first time comprehensive treatment of twentieth-century developments, this book sets American law and legal institutions in the broad context of social, economic, and political events, weaving together themes from the history of both constitutional and private law. The Magic Mirror treats law in society, and the legal implications of social change in areas ...

The Supreme Court in American Society Reader: Equal Justice Under Law
Kermit L. Hall

Routledge, 2000

The essays in this volume represent some of the best writing done about the history, political dynamics, and legal development of the Supreme Court. They remind us that interest in the court as not just a legal but a political and cultural entity has been prodigious. No other court has attracted anything approaching the scholarly attention on the so-called "Marble Palace" in Washington, D.C. Biographers, such as Bernard Schwartz and G. Edward ...

The Oxford Companion to American Law (Oxford Companions)2 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2002

American Law
I came by this book while actually looking for something else, and found it to be very informative and useful. Similar to other Oxford companions it is cross-referenced and attempts to be usable to both the legal community as well as ordinary people. The bookk is centered upon themes in law (common law, constitutional law, environmental law, etc. rather than specific cases, which makes it a bit ...

Constitutionalism and American Culture: Writing the New Constitutional

University Press of Kansas, 2002

Taking their cue from the late Paul L. Murphy, one of our nation's leading legal historians, this illustrious group of scholars argues that the field of constitutional history is "too important to be left solely to lawyers and judges." Their "state-of-the-field" volume reclaims constitutional history's rightful place as a vital and necessary part of our intellectual enterprise, in part by pushing the field onto fresh, even ...
