The Syntax of Spoken Arabic: A Comparative Study of Moroccan, Egyptian, Syrian, and Kuwaiti Dialects1 review
Kristen E. Brustad

Georgetown University Press, 2000

Excellent piece of work
For me, a budding linguist, it is pure joy to read this type of linguistic work. Brustad covers so many aspcts of spoken arabic in such a professional, ordered and useful manner. Examples are cited from the four dialect regions studied (Moroccan, Egyptian, Syrian and Kuwaiti) to prove each point. They are written in the original arabic (or how they would be written), then transliterated into the ...

I love Alif Baa
My only gripe is that I bought the book in the store and had to buy the answer key online. The answer key should be included with the book in store as well or INCLUDED in the damn book.

Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya with DVDs: A Textbook for Beginning Arabic, Part One Second Edition34 reviews

Al-Kitaab Part 1
This is a well designed textbook. Heavy on vocabulary, but presented in context. The DVD that accompanies it is very helpful for pronunciation and listening practice. Assumes a knowledge of Arabic script and the 150 vocabulary words presented in Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds, so if you haven't already gone through Alif Baa, I recommend starting there.

This is THE BEST course out there
Wow. I am surprised at the negative reviews and comments about this course but somewhat not. For the person that said his looked like it was printed on a Commodore 64, don't exaggerate; it is **not** as bad as all that! This book was written and published in the U.S. by the respected and esteemed Georgetown University. If it was that bad, I am sure they wouldn't have wasted their time printing ...

Kinda Beat Up
The product got to me in excellent time and I was extremely happy about that. But some of the ends were bent and folded and I was disappointed as the book was suppose to be brand new. It looks like it was dropped or smashed a couple of times but sent anyway.

Al-Kitaab Fii Ta Allum Al-Arabiyya, a Textbook for Beginning Arabic, Part One1 review
Kristen Brustad

Georgetown University Press, 1995

Excellent Series for learning Arabic
As I was instructed by Kristen Brustad and Mahmoud Al-Batal (two of the authors), I may be slightly biased; However, this series of books and methodology are an excellent, comprehensive way to learn Arabic reading and writing, along with differences in dialects and cultures as well as a solid basis for learning the spoken language. The accompanying audio-tapes will add to the learning process ...

Very complete
I have been using this book in my college Arabic classes three years now. It is an excellent book and is very complete. The DVDs supplement the book nicely. It would be almost impossible not to be able to learn the Arabic alphabet and some basic vocabulary with this book. The problem I have with using it for my classes is that you have to complete 7 of the 10 chapters before knowing all the ...

Al-Kitaab Audio on the Go3 reviews
Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal, ...

Georgetown University Press, 2007

Al-Kitaab Audio
If you are using Al-Kitaab and not also in an Arabic class, I'd say the audio on the go CD is a must. It's the dialogues and exercises from the DVD that comes with the book, but you can take it wherever you go on your MP3 player. Very helpful.

Straight Foward
I personally liked the layout. This answer key gives the answers in a concise, organized manner. Please take note that this is different from a solutions manual which gives explainations of the answers.

An excellent presentation of an intoxicating language
This this an excellent learning tool. I finished the book one with a tutor. I am trying to study the part two on my own. I have to say this is not a self study book. You are required to make presentations, write essays etc. You need somebody to correct them. But still there are a lot of stuff you can learn from part two without a tutor. The grammar is excellent. Almost intoxicating. It ...

Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya: A Textbook for Arabic, Part Three4 reviews
Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal, ...

Georgetown University Press, 2001

Hard, but rewarding
I can't really add too much to what the more articulate reviewers have already said. I'm really writing this to counter the negative reviews. I've been using this book for about a month, in a second-semester class (Alif-Baa was used in the first). It's true that it asks you to make leaps of faith, in that you're sometimes given only parts of a verb ('she lives', 'I study'), or apparently ...

Not helpful but...
...if you email the pubisher, you can get it for free. It's really only the monologues (off the cd's) and doesn't give 99% of the answers to the exercises in the book. Even with the lowest of expectations, you'll be disapointed. If you actually pay for it, you'll be angry too.

Al-Kitaab Fii Ta Allum Al- Arabiyya/a Textbook for Arabic (Al-Kitaab Fii Ta Allum Al-Arabiyya)6 reviews
Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal, ...

Georgetown University Press, 1997

Great readings but not for self-study
The second part of the Al Kitaab series puts an emphasis on the development of reading skills and concentrates on more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary, the type that students are likely to encounter in authentic texts (mainly for academic purposes). As a whole, this book is a lot more "academic" than the first part and this is probably why there seems to be such a wide gap between ...

Absolutely Brilliant
The book will teach brillant Arabic as long as you are not foolish enough to attempt the study of this language on your own. You should have either a native Arabic speaker (or a professor with a strong Arabic background) teaching you. First off, this is because a language is a means of communication and as such must be taught via communication. Secondly, it will insure you practice Arabic in a ...
