First in the series
What a great way to start. I love the background on the characters I fell in love with in Lonesome Dove. Can't wait to complete the whole series.

A must for Lonesome Dove fans
I checked this book out at the local library and had only read the introduction when I knew I had to buy it. Then I saw the photo of Augustus McCray's face that made me burst into tears and I ordered it on Amazon. It came quickly and didn't disappoint.

Review of the Berrybender series, vols 1-4. Overall rating 4.8 stars
This a quick minireview of the whole Berrybender series, now complete with the fourth volume -- it's really one long novel, and an omnibus edition can't be far behind. A *very* odd bunch of English aristos visit the American west in the 1830's and have adventures. A few of them even survive . This is McMurtry in antic farce mode, but with a base level of cruelty & violence that may squick ...

real characters, in three dimension
I wish I had read the book before I saw the movie. So much more realism in the book. The characters seem to jump out of the pages and become real. I cant wait to get back to reading after I have stopped. I want to finish this so I can get to the next book.

A master at work
Larry McMurtry's tale of fading male potency, sickness and approaching death is light, brilliant, succinct, and very readable. It is also grander than it appears on the surface. As Duane fades so does Thalia and the west that McMurtry and most of his readers love. In some ways this book's themes are similar to Cormac McCarthy's themes in "No Country for Old Men." However, McMurtry has a comic ...

Get past the first 50 pages and it will pull you kicking and screaming to the very end, where, when you close the book, you'll feel the loss of a good friend.
Books: A Memoir
Larry McMurtry
Simon & Schuster
, 2008
In a prolific life of singular literary achievement, Larry McMurtry has succeeded in a variety of genres: in coming-of-age novels like The Last Picture Show ; in collections of essays like In a Narrow Grave ; and in the reinvention of the Western on a grand scale in his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Lonesome Dove . Now, in Books: A Memoir , McMurtry writes about his endless passion for books: as a boy growing up in a largely "bookless" ...

A MASTERPIECE
Stepping Off the Edge: Learning & Living Spiritual Practice A classic in Native American literature, Ceremony tells the story of Tayo, a young Native man who returns from W.W.II with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Silko's masterful writing interweaves the personal, social and societal causes for Tayo's illness with traditional Native legends and cures. Beautiful, inspiring and very harsh. Like ...
Walter Benjamin at the Dairy Queen : Reflections on Sixty and Beyond

A literate and thoughtful "memoir"
Written when McMurtry was 62, WALTER BENJAMIN AT THE DAIRY QUEEN is probably best classified as a memoir, although it is not presented as such. Rather, the construct (perhaps "artifice" is the more apt word) is McMurtry sitting in the Dairy Queen in hometown Archer City, Texas reading an essay on storytelling by Walter Benjamin, which then prompts McMurtry to reflect on and then pass along some ...

Larry's Best?
Larry McMurtry may rank among the world's more inconsistent novelists. It's hard to imagine a book less interesting than "Texasville." "Lonesome Dove," while a fine epic read, will never be seriously confused with great literature. But "Leaving Cheyenne," modest and overlooked as it is, is an exceptionally deft and compelling story, containing, in Molly, one of the great female characters in 20th ...

Psycological novel
This is a great book but one would never read it if one merely read the back cover copy which is totally inaccurate -- so inaccurate that one suspects the writer of the copy has never read the book. I have read M. Monde Vanishes many times in French (La Fuite de M. Monde) and given dozens copies of this excellent English translation to friends and acquaintances. M. Monde learns, in the course ...

Don't Pass This Book By
In 1961 Larry McMurtry's debut, HORSEMAN, PASS BY, would revitalize the image of the cowboy in literature. With the release of the movie HUD (starring Paul Newman, Melvyn Douglas and Patricia Neal) two years later, it would be the first of many McMurtry stories to be adapted to film. HUD was a big success: Melvyn Douglas and Patricia Neal both won Oscars, while Paul Newman's performance in ...

Awesome finish
Throughout most of this book it seemed like a four star effort, not quite up to the hilarious standard set by Sin Killer, the first in this series. The Wandering Hill is not hilarious. It's a good action story with interesting and very unusual characters. The final chapter of the book is what earns that final fifth star. It is an awesome scene involving Pomp Charboneau, Tasmin Berrybender, ...

Addicted to an odd series
I was hooked on the Berrybender series because of the hysterical humor in Sin Killer, so I bought the other three books in the series. I'm reading the series as one long book, and I see no other way to read it. It is, after all, just one continuous story about the same characters on the same journey. It is as continuous as Lord of the Rings or Remembrance of Things Past, both of which were ...

Endearment for 'Terms'
When I first saw Shirley MacLaine as Aurora and Debra Winger as Emma I knew there was more to thair characters then just fun loving and tears. I picked up the novel 'Terms of Endearment' and finished it in two days, it made me laugh, wonder, and cry. The book surpasses the movie by FAR which is remarkable because the movie is fantastic (and has the 1982 Best Picture Oscar). I enjoyed every minute ...

Fluff, but *good* fluff. 4+ stars
McMurtry's latest Western is garnering mixed reviews, but I liked it a lot, except for the ending. It's a brisk faux-historical burlesque romp, and wicked funny. Marie Antoinette Courtwright, an unwitting pioneer at the tail end of the Old West, lands on her feet, and on her back, in a set-piece tour that includes her attempted seduction of Buffalo Bill, hiring on as his accountant, her slapdown ...

Amazing story
This book is the fascinating travel journal of George Kennan(1845-1924) who was employed by the Russo-American Telegraph company to explore Eastern Siberia in 1865. Leaving from San Francisco in July 1865 Mr. Kennan and three other men set out for Petropavlovski in Kamchatka. From there they began a march to the northwest, meeting the Sea of Okhotsk and then detouring West for a while until ...

A tale for the ages
Larry McMurtry turns out far too much material and that has hurt his legacy. But this book stands out at the top of his list, along with one or two others, all also important movies or, of course, TV mini-series. This book speaks to me particularly because I grew up in a similar town in Eastern Oregon, of all places. Anyone of a certain age who grew up in the West has to love this story, even ...
