Hadji Murad21 reviews
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy

One of the greatest novellas ever written
Certainly, the life and death of Hadji Murad left trenchant impression on young Tolstoy. So much so that Tolstoy wrote this novella few years before he died, and obviously did not intend to publish it. However fortunately it was published against his wish and it turned out to be the one of the most sublime novellas ever. The plot is based on what Tolstoy personally heard about legendary Hadji ...

Guerra y Paz31 reviews
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy

Planeta, 1998

The Gospel In Brief10 reviews

Beautiful Interpretation of the Gospels
I am, admittedly, a Tolstoy fan already, so I read this with a positive bias, but, that aside, this was one of the most powerful books I have read. I have always felt uncomfortable reading the New Testament because I can tell that liberties have been taken with the translation (just compare two versions) and I always think about all the people who have worked on it since its beginning. Tolstoy ...

War & Peace287 reviews
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy

Dorset Press, 1994

An amazing novel
Leo Tolstoy combines philosophy and history for one of the best fictional stories about a historical event that I have read. The plot is captivating from the beginning. A glimpse at the high society of Russia in the early 1800's followed by the story of the lives of the families at that gathering. The story of the Rostov's captures all the human emotions. The excitement of Nikolay at his ...

Resurrection29 reviews

Blue Unicorn Editions, 2001

"My business is to do what my conscience demands of me."
Resurrection (1899) is the last of Tolstoy's great novels and unlike the previous War and Peace and Anna Karenina the architectural lines are fairly unique. Whereas in the previous novels attention is continually shifted from one hero to another, in Resurrection Tolstoy follows Dimitri Nekhlydov step by step, drilling to the core of his thoughts, commenting on his actions, analyzing his motives, ...

Anna Karenina238 reviews
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, Leo Tolstoy

Blue Unicorn Editions, 2001

both timeless and of its era
Many themes of Anna Karenina are timeless: marriage, infidelity, the roles of men and women, personal fulfillment, honor, spirituality, and naturalism. If that isn't enough, then Tolstoy offers an 18th-century look at Russian society and culture, still well before the run-up to the revolution. Don't look to Tolstoy for enlightened feminism, although one of the characters argues for education and ...

What Men Live By and Other Tales1 review
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy

A wonderful story
I am surprised when I read such a straight forward, small book by such a famous author. The lessons in this book are worth knowing, and it is very easy to read.

The Devil1 review

ReadHowYouWant.com e-Books, 2008

Melville House Press makes a great little book in The Devil
I read this while also reading the tail end of Tolstoy's War & Peace and so have this juxtaposition in mind. The folks at Melville House Press have produced a beautiful little book in The Devil. Here, Tolstoy paints the characters just as vividly, but with an appropriately singular--relentless--focus. You are with the protagonist, Yvegeny, throughout his struggles with fidelity and like ...

Twenty-three Tales1 review

Take a look at REAL Christian Fiction
While thousands of books have been written to tell us what Christianity is all about, there are few works outside the parables in the Gospels themselves that actually show us what it really is all about. In this book you will find some stories that are short and simple, others longer and more complex in structure, but all of them with the signature of the literary giant who after receiving world ...

The Death of Ivan Ilyich74 reviews
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy

ReadHowYouWant, 2008

Wonderful
Tolstoy's brief novella 'Death of Ivan Ilyich' is one of the most compact and brilliant meditations on the meaning of death in literature. Tolstoy's breathtaking naturalism is truly miraculous. Ivan Ilyich is respectful administrator who is dying a painful death from a malignant tumor. Much as Kafka would later do in 'The Metamorphosis,' the dying man's suffering is nothing more than an annoyance ...

Anna Karenina5 reviews

Recorded Books, 2004

Great audio version!
This is a great audio version of Anna Karenina. Although the narrator's Russian pronunciation of the names leaves something to be desired, everything else is superb. She is able to effectively create the characters in your mind, and does it so well that you don't even notice the narration--you simply see the images in your mind. Very, very enjoyable.

The Kreutzer Sonata And Other Stories14 reviews
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, Leo Tolstoy

Blue Unicorn Editions, 2001

not simply autobiographical
I think that the reviews here are a little bit off and essentially betray themselves by insulting the writer, and without reason praising his earlier works as a means of battering this later one. first of all, nobody who wants to simply spew out his own life and endoctrinate his readers puts his own views into the mouth of a character who is carefully portrayed as out of his mind. calling Tolstoy ...

The Death Of Ivan Ilych8 reviews
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy, Leo Tolstoy

Blue Unicorn Editions, 2001

A Disturbing View of a Universal Theme
Commonly regarded as Tolstoy's third greatest work, "The Death of Ivan Ilych," if not his most famous work is, at the very least, one of the most poignant and powerful short stories ever written. For those who are interested in taking their first leap into the Tolstoy ouvre, perhaps it is better to start with a shorter work. I would suggest this one, because despite its brevity, it packs as ...

Very powerful story of humanity
I, too, have to disagree with this 'english class' in their dull-assesment of this story. This must be a very young class of students who haven't experienced enough of human nature to fully appreciate and understand the complexity and beauty of the 2 characters in this wonderfully touching story. This is the first story that has ever made me weep openly while reading. The second, also by ...

"As one needs nothing oneself, why not live for others?": Olenin's epiphany
In the middle of _The Cossacks_, Dmitri Olenin, a young Russian cadet reflects joyfully, "Happiness is to live for others. How clear it is!," while being mercilessly bitten by mosquitos during a deer hunt. Despite the fact that his "whole body [is] consumed by a consuming itch," Olenin revels in the beauties of bountiful nature. It is almost as if he gives himself up to the mosquitos, whom he ...

The Law of Love and the Law of Violence2 reviews
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy

University Press of the Pacific, 2001

The book that spawned Dr. King?
Did you know that Tolstoy created Gandhi with his "The Kingdom of God is Within You?" Gandhi says as much, having read it as a young barrister in UK. It transformed him (along with Ruskin's "Unto This Last")and on he went to save India with this "bible" under his arm, by way of South Africa. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. was formed if not created by Tolstoy's "The Law of Love and the Law of ...

Childhood9 reviews

Blue Unicorn Editions, 2001

Early Tolstoy
When this book first hit the stores in Russia about 150 years ago, folks didn't think too much of it, seeing it merely as a minor work by one who had read Dickens. Tolstoy himself claimed that no one taught him more about the art of fiction than Dickens, and the literary circles of Russia were Dickens-fanatics, Russia recieving his works only after England. But beyond being similiar to David ...

The Slavery of Our Times1 review
Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy

ReadHowYouWant, 2008

Figments of a utopian mind
This essay is a frontal assault on capitalism, socialism, industrialism, the division of labor, urban life, imperialism, law, government, social contract theory, and political economy, an outburst against just about every principle used to justify and uphold social life as we know it now or as other people knew it in any previous period of history. It is a strange and bizarre synthesis of ...
