A classic of theological insight
This book is one of the first to really change my outlook on many subjects related to Christ, Christianity, Anarchy, Existentialism, Personal Responsibility, etc. Everyone should know about Tolstoy. If you think you understand the world or you think things are a bit strange here, either way this book is for you.

Great audio version!
This is a great audio version of Anna Karenina. Although the narrator's Russian pronunciation of the names leaves something to be desired, everything else is superb. She is able to effectively create the characters in your mind, and does it so well that you don't even notice the narration--you simply see the images in your mind. Very, very enjoyable.

My first thoughts after completion
I held the book in my hands and felt its weight. It looked quite big; not as big as when I first saw it but still big - and had I actually gone through all those pages and all those letters? Apparently. What now? What was this feeling spreading in me? was it emptiness? I felt sad. For the first time after completing a book there actually was a possibility that I would never read a better ...

Only imposing in length.
I found my way to Tolstoy circumvently by way of other Russian authors. It seems all roads lead to the count one way or another when it comes to Russian literature. Certainly in my youth the expression, "It isn't 'War and Peace'!" was a sarcastic and thoughtless epitaph when trying to get through a book or writing something. Well, this edition takes the academic intimidation off the novel and ...

Tolstoy Wrote with the Mind of God
My life would be a poor thing had I never read Tolstoy. Why does Russian translate so very very easily to English? This I found in Russian literature.

War and Peace centers broadly on Napoleon’s invasion of Russia in 1812 and follows three of the best-known characters in literature: Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a count who is fighting for his inheritance and yearning for spiritual fulfillment; Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, who leaves behind his family to fight in the war against Napoleon; and Natasha Rostov, the beautiful young daughter of a nobleman, who intrigues both men. ...

Anna Karenina (Oprah's Book Club)166 reviews

Penguin Classics, 2004

Big and beautiful...
Anna Karenina is probably the most detailed work on relationships, families, society, and spirituality ever written... It is detailed to the point of being its own universe - and one that moves with the consistency of a fine tuned machine. One can only approach such a work by abandoning to it completely - allowing it to take you in whatever direction it wills - with the full acceptance that the ...

Sense of Self
"Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way" - Leo Tolstoy from Anna Karenina Anna Karenina is a beautifully written novel about three families: the Oblonskys, the Levins, and the Karenins. The first line (one of the most famous in literature) hints at Tolstoy's own views about happy and unhappy marriages having these same three families also represent ...

Anna Karenina

Anna Karenina tells of the doomed love affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna and the dashing officer, Count Vronsky. Tragedy unfolds as Anna rejects her passionless marriage and must endure the hypocrisies of society. Anna Karenina (Bramblewood Press Classics)

Bramblewood Press, LLC, 2007

Anna Karenina is widely accepted as one of the greatest works of realist fiction, and is undoubtedly one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. Tolstoy considered this to be his first true novel, and though it was not largely recognized by critics of the time, the literary master Dostoevsky found it to be magnificent. Hardly enough praise can be written for this work, and it remains one of a handful of novels that one truly must read.

Don't download! Horrible!!
This is a terrible example of a Kindle book. You cannot access chapters or specific stories without paging through the ENTIRE book page by page by page by page until you find what you are looking for. It is utterly useless. Only 99 cents and I'm going to be asking for my money back. Don't waste your time.

A Search Unfulfilled
This book includes some of Tolstoy's essays written during his time of deep internal spiritual struggle. Upon his renunciation of a life of aristocratic wealth and worldly pleasure, Tolstoy longed for the sense of true peace that he saw in the peasant class. Thus he embarked upon a search for meaning and happiness through a life of simple faith, manual labor, and poverty. He formulated his own ...

Paperback Building Block
A new translation by Anthony Briggs, introduction by Orlando Figes. I chose this translation based on the strength of the Penguin Classics imprint, the readable size of the print, and the back-cover blurps promising a new and accessible translation. Overall, the translation read very well, although I agree with two negative comments I read on internet blogs about the translation: 1). The ...

Wisdom that changes its reader
I had the fortunate job of proof reading and minor editing of this book, for translater Peter Sekerin. As I spent the many hours doing so, I found that Tolstoy's thoughts and wisdom, as you continue to read him over and over, almost permeates your thoguhts and come to mind as you go through out your day. He was a very wise and learned man, but also a very practical one. This project in its ...

The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Other Stories (Wordsworth Classics)1 review
Leo Tolstoy

Wordsworth Editions, 2004

Catastrophic
These stories give an excellent view of Tolstoy's vision on the real nature of man, his place in our world, on sex, marriage and women, on man's ultimate destiny and on morals. For Tolstoy, man as a species is barely more than an animal incapable of controlling his `animal passion'. More, `it is perhaps better that people should be pure animals, then they would not suffer from death and ...
