Jim's Dog Muffins 3 reviews Miriam Cohen, Lillian Hoban
Yearling, 1996
I read this book when I was young... I can see the other reviewer's point of view in feeling that this book may be inappropriate for her first grader but I read this book when I was young. I was probably about the same age. I believe it is an excellent book that helped me to understand death and the feelings and actions that go with it before I actually experienced it. I think it is better for children to read it and understand it ...

STARRING FIRST GRADE 1 review Miriam Cohen
Dell Publishing, 1987
very good book I really don't remember much about the book since it was about 15 years ago I read it but I remember liking the props they used for the play. Hope I helped and someone can give a better account of this book.

See You in Second Grade 2 reviews Miriam Cohen, Lillian Hoban
Spoken Arts, 1989
I remember reading this around 1st or 2nd grade I loved the illustrations and I could relate to anna maria crying when her lunch and swimsuit got switched with her brothers gym clothes at home, and I could relate to the girl who was afraid to go in the water. Basically the class goes on a trip to the beach at the end of their first grade year and lots of fun stuff happens and they have a picnic and all.

Will I Have a Friend? 4 reviews Miriam Cohen
Aladdin, 1989
A classic that's still true today For over thirty years, this book has answered one of a young child's most important questions about starting school: will I have any friends? Walking to school on the first day with his father, that's the question Jim asks. His father smiles down at him and says, "I think you will." Jim's a little intimidated at first. "All the boys were making noise. All the girls were laughing. ...

When Will I Read? 1 review Miriam Cohen, Lillian Hoban
Yearling, 1987
Great book for teachers! Miriam Cohen explores what it means to "be a reader" through her delightful class of first graders. Jim wonders when he will learn to read. His holistic teacher points out to him that he is already reading many things such as familiar books, classroom signs and so on. As young children enjoy reading (or listening) about Jim's exploration, they also are learning about reading and what it ...

First Grade Takes a Test 9 reviews Miriam Cohen, Lillian Cohen
Yearling, 1995
Totally relevant for ANY standardized test taking grade I have to disagree with some of the comments made by other reviewers. This is a fabulous read aloud for intermediate and upper elementary students, as well as for their parents during Meet the Teacher night. With so much more pressure placed on students (and teachers!) as a result of NCLB, this book has a fabulous underlying message that goes beyond the unkindness of name calling - that kids ...

When Will I Read: Welcome to First Grade 1 review Miriam Cohen
Demco Media, 1996
Evidence of how we all learn at different times! This is a very heartwarming book that allows students to see that we all "pick up" skills at different times. Being a first grade teacher, I know what it's like to see a child who becomes frustrated while watching everyone around them reading. This book speaks to the children that are waiting and watching everyone around them engage in the joy of reading. It provides them with the hope that ...

No Good in Art 3 reviews Miriam Cohen
Greenwillow, 1980
A middle school favorite, too This delightful story has many connections for middle schoolers as well as younger students. The older set can very quickly relate to a teacher that has convinced him or her that (s)he "can't". It is a favorite and the students love the illustrations as well as the realistic dialogue. I use it often in class and at home; it is also a frequently requested, quick, but potoent read-a-loud. A ...

So What (First Grade Feelings) 2 reviews Miriam Cohen
Spoken Arts, 1985
Changed the way my daughter handles conflict I think this book is about average as a story. However, my daughter's kindergarten teacher recommended this to us because she thought my daughter was "taking things too hard" when interacting with other kids. The message of the book is that you can choose to take things hard or just say (inside your head) "so what" when kids do things that hurt your feelings. For an overly sensitive kid this ...

See You Tomorrow, Charles 3 reviews Miriam Cohen
Greenwillow Books, 1983
Response to previous review While I applaud the dedication of the anonymous school psychologist who criticized this book for its lack of moralizing, let me offer this: a work of literature is more elusive and subtle than a sermon, its value potentially far more powerful -- for spoonfed values, anyone can read to children from The Book of Virtues and bore them silly. Miriam Cohen's gift is in being able to present with ...

Lost in the Museum 1 review Miriam Cohen, Lillian Hoban
Greenwillow, 1979
An easy-to-read adventure. When Jim's first grade class goes on a field trip to the Natural History Museum, Jim and some friends get seperated from the group. Jim struggles with courage as he is frightened by a dinosaur skeleton, but regains his bravery to find their teacher. I like the illustrations of the museum, especially the one in which Jim is alone in a room with a giant blue whale hanging above... he looks ...
