Betsy Tacy39 reviews
Maud Hart Lovelace

Harpercollins, 1993

Wonderful book!
I bought this book for my granddaughter. I was going to start collecting the series for her and present it to her on her 5th bday. But couldn't wait. This book is so charming and full of wonderful lessons of life that kids today don't get to see very often. I would encourage you to buy this book for your kids, grandkids and even yourself if you'd like to take a step back in time!

Betsy-Tacy and Tib18 reviews
Maud Hart Lovelace

HarperCollins, 1994

The first Betsy-Tacy book with Tib
I grew up on the Betsy, Tacy, Tib novels as a child. I followed the adventures and drama of Betsy, Tacy, and Tib as children and all the way until they were in college. "Betsy-Tacy and Tib" is the follow up to the popular "Betsy-Tacy". The book pretty much picks up where "Betsy-Tacy" leaves off. In this book, the girls get a third friend named Tib, a cute blonde girl who had moved to Deep Valley ...

Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown15 reviews
Maud Hart Lovelace

Harpercollins, 1993

The Betsy Tacy Series is My Favorite of All Time
I read these books as a child and reread them to this day. The first four books, Betsy Tacy, Betsy Tacy and Tib, Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill, Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown are wonderful for a girl age 5 and up. The books progress in reading level as they go, as well as in themes. The final six books in the series, just reissued in 3 2-book volumes, are absolutely amazing. They are Heaven to ...

Little Train11 reviews
Lois Lenski

Random House Children's Books, 1977

Toddler favorite
This book is a favorite of our (train loving) toddler. The illustrations are sweet, the text is simple but engaging. This is what all books for toddlers should be.

Betsy and Tacy Go over the Big Hill7 reviews
Maud Hart Lovelace

Harpercollins, 1993

fine and readable even for french childs
I bought this book for two french childs to test american literature with young non-english-spoken childs. I must admit I read it before. It's out of time and pleasant for anyone. But it's readable for any child around the planet.

Little Family5 reviews
Lois Lenski

DoubleDay, 2000

The Little Family
This is a sweet little book about a family going through their normal daily routines. It was written in 1932, a much more innocent time, but the daily tasks are basically the same - they're just accomplished differently. My son (age almost 3) loves this book and asks to read it several times a week. I think it is very relaxing and comforting. Some kids books today - like their tv shows - are ...

The Little Auto3 reviews
Lois Lenski

H.Z. Walck, 1934

A 1934 Gem
An old-fashioned, quaint and charming book for young children. My boys (ages 3 and 1) pull it off the bookshelf a few times a week and bring it to me to read to them. The references to passing a horse and buggy, stopping for the trolley car, and waiting for the policeman to switch the "stop-go" signal are throwbacks to a simpler time. Delightful and highly recommended.

The Betsy-Tacy Treasury6 reviews
Maud Hart Lovelace, Lois Lenski

HarperCollins Publishers, 1995

This book contains the first 4 books of the series.
It's not very well spelled out, but this book contains the first four books of the series: Betsy-Tacy, Betsy-Tacy and Tib, Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill, and Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown. It would be great to have all of these in the same volume, but it might get a little heavy if you are reading chapter a day to your munchkin. Of course, it's hard to go wrong with anything Betsy and Tacy.

Newbery Award Library III: Walk Two Moons, Catherine, Called Birdy, Indian Captive5 reviews
HarperCollins, Lois Lenski, ...

HarperCollins Publishers, 1996

Sad, happy, depressing all at the same time.
This is a very nice book and well written. Sharon Creech is a very imaginative writer. She comes up with wonderfull idea's. She knows exactly what she is going to write next. She doesn't stop to think on what to write. I think that's a very good habit. If you like this book then you should read "Chasing red bird" that is a very good book. But anyways when I was reading this book I couldn't put ...

On a Summer Day2 reviews
Lois Lenski

Hill & Wang Pub, 1953

A great story of pretend play
This book is a wonderful story of pretend play. It is about a sister and brother who play outside in the yard for the day. They pretend to be on a train, be in school, go to church, go grocery shopping. They pretend to be different animals, climb trees, swing on a swing. The pictures show the children making a "train", a "school", a "church", a "grocery store" out of everyday objects -- boxes ...

More Mr Small1 review
Lois Lenski

Random House Children's Books, 1980

Perfect for bedtime!
This book is so great because the airplane story so boring, but because it's about a car, a sailboat, and an airplane, my 3-year-old wants us to read it at bedtime. Because it's so boring, it always puts him to sleep! Seriously, always! You can't beat that!

Blue Ridge Billy1 review
Lois Lenski

J. B. Lippincott, 1946

Review taken from DJ description...
"Billy Honeycutt was a barefoot boy from Roundabout Creek in a remote cove of the North Carolina mountains. He liked to hurry with his evening chores so he could scramble up the mountainside to watch the sun go down. He dreamed of the day when he might own a fiddle and play it at the neighborhood music-frolics. Billy was a very lively boy and the story of his adventures, from riding the mule ...

Blue Ridge Billy2 reviews
Lois Lenski

Harpercollins Juvenile Books, 2000

Old fashion character education that is applicable for today
Blue Ridge Billy by Lois Lenski is an old fashioned Smokey Mountain story that speaks to a host of values that modern day parents want to teach their children, too. Ten year old Billy obeys his father without question, serves his mother with devotion, cares for neighbors with loyalty, yet persues his own dreams of owning a musical instrument, a true luxury in his time and place. Hardworking, ...

Houseboat Girl2 reviews
Lois Lenski

J. B. Lippincott Company, 1957

Book Review
This book is great. The Patsy character is my mother-in-law. She and all her brother and sisters are still living well in 2006. She resides in the south while her brother and sisters live in the northern region. She has 6 kids of her own and MANY grand childern. I have heard her tell her stories of living on the river, and it is great to be able to read about it in a story book as well. She ...

This book will delight even the youngest "reader" with its simple language, and the bright, cheerful illustrations (also by the author). I'm so glad that her books are finally coming back into print!

Bound Girl of Cobble Hill1 review
Lois Lenski

J. B. Lippincott Company, 1966

An absorbing book for all ages, set in Colonial Connecticut
Young MakePeace is "bound out" to her uncle when her father dies, making him responsible for her schooling, clothing and board. In return, Makepeace must work faithfully at the Five Pines Inn until she is sixteen. But the schooling she longs for, and the love she needs, are going to be harder to obtain than anyone in this little Puritan Connecticut settlement could imagine.

Mr. and Mrs. Noah2 reviews
Lois Lenski

Harpercollins, 1982

Traditional Baby Board Book
This is an exceptional title from the legendary Lois Lenski. This classic children's author was the daughter of a minister. She puts her Christian foundations to good use in this colorfully ilustrated Bible story. This book, first published in 1948, manages to tell the familiar Noah's Ark story with simple but colorful pictures. The text is just perfect for toddlers who want something just ...

Cotton in My Sack1 review
Lois Lenski

Dell Yearling Book, 1969

A childhood book for me
I loved this book 45+ years ago and I'm thrilled to have it again to read to and with the special young people in my life now, friends and grandkids. I find I have to explain some PC issues/words, I'm happy to do it, but the life of the migrant workers is still relevant today. It's a great story about perseverance and family bonds.
