Believing it All: Lessons I Learned from My Children14 reviews

Wonderful book--don't miss it!
This book is wonderful beyond words. I read it, then my husband read it. We both laughed (I cried) and agreed that it was, indeed, one of the best books we have ever read (and we read quite a bit). Anyone who has children should read this and keep a copy on hand. We have purchased at least five copies and hand them out to friends who are expecting, grandparents, relatives, etc... The writing ...

The Secret Society of Demolition Writers3 reviews
Aimee Bender, Benjamin Cheever, ...

Random House, 2005

We wined, dined and discussed.
My book club recently had the pleasure of discussing this fabulous collection of short stories edited by writer, Marc Parent. When he presented such famous writers as Anna Quindlen, Sebastian Junger, Aimee Bender and others with the opportunity to write anonomously and "dangerously" they jumped at the opportunity. We not only enjoyed reading and discussing the intriguing and sometimes odd ...

Gerard Malanga: Screen Tests, Portraits, Nudes 1964-1996
Ben Maddow, Peter Wehrli, ...

Steidl, 2003

Steidl Collectors Series Gerard Malanga made his reputation as a co-founder of Andy Warhol's factory. His career as a photographer began there between 1964 and 1966, when he and Warhol made screen tests of 300 people. Later on, he stunned the world with his portraits of Iggy Pop, Robert Mapplethorpe, Tennessee Williams, Alice Cooper, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed and William S. Burroughs. These photographs take the viewer back to Pop Culture (as it once ...

Gerard Malanga: Screen Tests - Portraits - Nudes (Steidl Collectors Books)1 review
A.D. Coleman

Steidl, 2000

Masterpiece of photography in the 70s
This book is a nice summary of Malanga's photographical work. Don't expect much new work. The portraits e.g. are a selection of those in "Resistance to Memory", but the framing is much better (and it's cheaper). Anyway, Screen Tests and Portraits gives a great view into New York's Underground and Warhol's Factory of the 70s. It's a pitty that the poems of Malanga are not integrated in this ...

Turning Stones: My Days and Nights with Children at Risk: A Caseworker's Story186 reviews
Marc Parent, Anna Quindlen (foreword)

Ballantine Books, 1998

A beautiful, yet emotionally challenging read...
I read this book very, very quickly. That's the only way to read it, to avoid breaking down and sobbing throughout every chapter. And there are some doozies in here. Remember the story of the woman who threw two of her five children out the window of her tenement (something like five floors up) in New York City? Marc worked the aftermath of that case. The woman had never been investigated ...

Stella2 reviews
Marc Parent

Ipso Facto, 2001

Classic photographs of elegant 1950's fashions
In the 1950's, fashion designers and photographers produced commercial images that are now appreciated as fine art. Comparatively few books have concentrate on this work. This book, a collection of photos from the personal album of a leading Paris model of the period, is one of the best. Most of the photos show the model (Stella) in Jacques Fath, some are in Adele Simpson and others. Various ...
