Summery Saturday Morning 4 reviews Margaret Mahy
Hamish Hamilton Ltd, 1998
Capturing NZ summers as I remember them Mum takes the kids and the dogs down the track to the beach, past the man mowing his lawns and the woman hanging out the washing, just as you would on a summery Saturday morning in NZ. I love the rhyming and the repetition, and so does my daughter (aged 4. I can see why this book won the NZ Post Children's Book Award in 1999. The ultimate compliment comes from my daughter, who chooses this ...

Ultra-violet catastrophe! Or, The unexpected walk with Great-Uncle Magnus Pringle 4 reviews Margaret Mahy
Parents' Magazine Press, 1975
Seismological Singularity! A beautiful wonderful book of my youth. You may remember author Margaret Mahy from her fabulous young adult novels like, "The Changeover" or "The Haunting". You may remember illustrator Brian Froud from Terry Jones's delightfully twisted, "Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book". Back in 1975, these two artists in their fields worked together to create a book accomplished the mighty task of ...

The Boy Who Was Followed Home 2 reviews Margaret Mahy
Franklin Watts, 1975
Delightful Book This is a wonderful book for reading aloud. It's short and sweet and very clever. My almost three-year-old loves it, as do his older friends. Five year olds think it's really funny, and like to talk about the pictures. The illustrations are half the fun; I notice something new each time.
One of our favorites!

The Great Piratical Rumbustification & the Librarian and the Robbers 4 reviews Margaret Mahy; Michael Smith, Michael Smith
David R Godine, 2001
Mahy doing what Mahy does best It's kind of sad that the lack of reviews here makes it look like no one has looked at this funny book on this site since 1998. It's very funny and just the kind of book a young boy would make any adult read to him over and over. And girls will like it too. If you had put your hand over my eyes and read the first paragraph of the first story to me, with main characters Alpha, Oliver and Omega, I ...

The Changeover (M Books) 33 reviews Margaret Mahy
Nelson Thornes Ltd, 1989
One of my teenage favorites I read this book as a teenager when it originally came out in 1984. The greatest compliment that I can give The Changeover is that twenty+ years later, I still reread it sometimes--and I still enjoy it. I can't say that about too many of my childhood books.
The Changeover was a rare bird back in mid-eighties--there weren't too many well-written books about magic and the supernatural with ...

The Five Sisters 5 reviews Margaret Mahy
Puffin, 1999
WWWWWOOOOOOWWWWWWW! This is a book that a friend of mine was reading and said it was a really good book and that I should read it. So I read it and loved it. This book is about a chain of paper dolls that are hooked together [you know like a set of things where you cut out one design and unfold it and you have that design repeated but the hands in our case are hooked together.]Well a girl's grandma makes her set ...

Boom Baby Boom Boom 2 reviews Margaret Mahy
Viking Juvenile, 1997
My two year old loves this book! This book is great to read out loud. We discovered this at the library and have added it to our home library because we all love the story and pictures. It has fun and snappy word sequences that make it appealing to very young children, and I think my daughter will enjoy it for several years.

Beaten by a Balloon 1 review Margaret Mahy
Hamish Hamilton Ltd, 1997
peaceniks prevail Sam Appleby doesn't appreciate the fact that his father won't let him have guns and swords like his friends, so when a thief comes to town, the two of them use a wide array of items from a sunflower to a chocolate cake to successfully stop him. This book is very funny and will be enjoyed by every child that ever waved a stick as a weapon, and by every parent that tried to explain why this ...

Chewing Gum Rescue and Other Stories 2 reviews Margaret Mahy
Chivers Audio Books, 1988
A Hidden Gem I picked this audio cassette up at the library for a long car trip last summer. At some point on the journey home it was the only cassette we had not yet listened to, and we popped it in, never having heard of it or the author. It did not take long till the reverent silence in the car confirmed that this was a fabulous collection of stories. My husband and I kept glancing at each other...how ...

A Villain's Night Out 2 reviews Margaret Mahy
Penguin Books (NZ), 1999
A perfect book for kids who love to write Formby wants to write a book with the perfect villain. He succeeds and his villain, Squidgy Moot, comes to life. Formby and his sister have a hilarious interaction as they hack into each other's computers and try to change Squidgy Moot's next move. You'll laugh a lot when you read this book. I couldn't put it down.

Maddigan's Fantasia 2 reviews Margaret Mahy
Faber Children's Books, 2006
This book has everything Science fiction, fantasy, time travel, adventure, strong girl/woman characters, all rolled up together in a well-written package that will hold attention. While this seems to be classified as a "teen" book, it's perfectly appropriate for upper elementary readers, who will love it.

The Wind Between the Stars 2 reviews Margaret Mahy
J M Dent & Sons Ltd, 1976
The Wind Between the Stars After being given this much loved book when I was 7 years old, I read it many times during the intervening 22 years. It disappeared from my memory for a few years, until when in my early 20's my brother died. Watching the sky that night a friend made the comment that my brother was up amongst the stars now ...which brought the book back into my memory. It was a great comfort to me during the ...

Tingleberries, Tuckertubs and Telephones 2 reviews Margaret Mahy
Viking Juvenile, 1996
Tingleberries a Hit with 5th Graders I am a 5th grade teacher and I just finished reading this book aloud to my class. They could hardly stand for me to stop reading each day. It was a valuable resource for asking the students to predict what the next chapter would hold, for reviewing previous events, and for introducing them to figurative language. The chapter titles are great discussion starters as well. Humorous characters, ...

The Great White Man-eating Shark (Picture Puffin Story Books) 2 reviews Margaret Mahy
Puffin Books, 1995
Great book - not too frightening, good moral My son likes scary things, but gets frightened by most! He loves this book because it features a (not-too) scary shark and a (not-too) scary situation. Norvin, a boy who looks amazingly like a shark, learns the hard way not to 'cry wolf' -- or, in this case, 'cry shark'! Adult-ish humor included for those reading to the little ones -- I love this book.

The Blood - and - Thunder Adventure on Hurricane Peak 1 review Margaret Mahy
J M Dent & Sons Ltd, 1989
The Blood and Thunder Adventure on Hurricane Peak When I was a little kid, this was my very favourite book!! Margaret Mahy is a very talented writer, and this book was great for me to read over and over again. I also liked the pirates mixed up voyage, it was another of the books written in Margaret Mahy's collection - with a very unique writing style. I was about 8 when I actually sent Margaret Mahy a fan letter!! I got a long (two pages on a ...

The Greatest Show Off Earth 2 reviews Margaret Mahy
Demco Media, 1996
This book was great! This book was one of the best I have ever read! Margaret Mahy's sense of humor is wonderful and made the book a delight to read. This book starts out with intriging pasts scattered by a huge explosion in an outer space laboratory, which come together, piece by piece, to create a hilarious and out of this world ending!
