Hard Row30 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 2008

Not just characters, but the setting evolves in this series
In long series, the characters often develop more intense personal lives as the books roll out. In this series, I am fascinated that not just Deb'rah changes and becomes deeper, but so does Colleton County, the rural North Carolina setting of the books. Urbanization, gentrification, corporate farming, immigration, race relations...they're fun whodunits, but also a little slice of sociological ...

Death's Half Acre14 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 2008

One of the best in the series
Once again, Margaret Maron writes a compelling mystery with all the right ingredients: a strong believable heroine, a suspenseful plot, a strong sense of place and even a few touches of humor. Luckily I set aside some time on a rainy weekend. It's not a book I can put down easily. Fans of Deborah Knott will be relieved to find that Deborah's marriage has not weakened the series. We don't get ...

Shooting at Loons (Deborah Knott Mysteries)10 reviews
Margaret Maron

Mysterious Press, 1995

North Carolina resident enjoys Maron's books
As a somewhat recent resident of Raleigh (4 1/2 years, though that almost makes me a native), and lifelong mystery lover, I truly enjoy reading Maron's books set throughout North Carolina. I stumbled upon her Deborah Knott series at the library and have devoured the entire series in less than a year. (I rarely dedicate myself to one author or one series.) But to correct Jerry Bull, this book is ...

Winter's Child20 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 2007

It's all about pride
There are two murder mysteries in this novel. They may seem unrelated, but when motives are established, a common thread appears. The one death involves a man who was disliked by almost everyone. He abused his wife, consorted with other women (at least one of whom was married to someone else), picked fights, and generally gave a lot of people reasons to kill him. I suspected the killer, but ...

Slow Dollar (Deborah Knott Mysteries)17 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 2003

An enjoyable modern cozy
Cozy mysteries are really of two types: Novels in the traditional cozy style whose main emphasis is a mystery and its resolution (e.g., Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers) and novels in the more modern cozy format, whose main emphasis is on social interactions (primarily between family, friends, and coworkers) with the mystery being a smaller component of the exposition. This is definitely a cozy ...

High Country Fall13 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 2005

Outstanding mystery with great characters!
This book was a nearly perfect read, a fantastic blend of mystery and what is great about good fiction - relationships and character development. This is the fourth book in the Deborah Knott series that I've read. I didn't care for the really early works much but since she's started with Dwight as lover/husband, for me, at least, the series has really improved. In this one, there's a great ...

Rituals of the Season17 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 2006

Very good
I always enjoy this books I think that I have read every one of the Debrah Knott series, I enjoy the friendships and trouble that she always seems to get into. The mysteries are always intriguing and keep you interested in whatever is going on, and your always trying to guess who do it.

Bootlegger's Daughter30 reviews
Margaret Maron

Mysterious Press, 1993

It Won Them All.
Margaret Maron's BOOTLEGGER'S DAUGHTER won every award for mystery fiction and is the beginning of the Deborah Knott series, with one prequel BLOODY KIN. Set in a fictional place near Raleigh, NC the story explores family, politics, homosexuality, and a cold case of murder. The pace is slow of a modern mystery, but the reader has time to explore some fascinating characters and setting. A very ...

Uncommon Clay13 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 2002

She really tried to mind her own business
The Nordan family has problems. The death of three of them in rather gruesome ways is the least of it. The head of the family Amos Nordan is a cave man in his thinking, about woman, and the government interfering with his business, and its causing the rest of the family nothing but trouble. Lucky for the readers there Judge Deborah Knott, with her easy and funny look on life, and of course the ...

Southern Discomfort (Deborah Knott Mysteries)6 reviews
Margaret Maron

Mysterious Press, 1993

ANOTHER GOOD ONE BY MARGATET MARON!!!!
This is the second book in the Deborah Knott Series. In this one Deborah is sworn in as Judge. She is asked to help in building a house for battered women. It is being build by all women workers. Later she finds her niece in the house, beaten up and maybe a rape attempt. The young man who did this is found dead at the scene. Deborah has picked up the hammer used in the killing and therefore could ...

Baby Doll Games (Sigrid Harald Mysteries)4 reviews
Margaret Maron

Mysterious Press, 1995

Sometimes, you get a yen to go back and reread...
titles or series you've enjoyed. I've had just such a wish with Margaret Maron's first series, the Sigrid Harald "cop" series, set in New York City. Sigrid's a bit of a loner, who starts to find her true self after she makes Lieutenant in a midtown squad. The first 4 books in the series are all worth reading (Start with "One Coffee With", "Death of a Butterfly", "Death in Blue Folders" and "The ...

Killer Market (Deborah Knott Mysteries)10 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 1999

Great detail
Maron's Southern mysteries are just terrific; from the accurate descriptions of the courtroom scenes, the "hearty" Southern food, the family, and the country, it is obvious that Maron has either lived through these experiences or has done some really good research. I started the series with this book and have gone back and forth in the series until I finished them all. This one was possibly my ...

Bloody Kin3 reviews
Margaret Maron

Mysterious Press, 1995

Bloody Kin is right!
Margaret Maron is a great storyteller, and although she has written a series based in New York, North Carolina appears to be where her heart is. Although Deborah Knott does not appear in "Bloody Kin," we get a different, more family-oriented view of Dwight Bryant, so we feel that we are on familiar ground. Our heroine, Kate, is portrayed as a woman determined to make a place for herself in ...

DEATH IN BLUE FOLDERS (Sigrid Harald Mysteries)1 review
Margaret Maron

Crimeline, 1992

Sigrid Harald, #3 of 8, well done!
...This follows the basic form of most of her titles -- a murder occurs fairly early in the tale, as here, often in chapter one, and we work the clues and the successor crimes with Sigrid and her police colleagues until she nabs her crook. Usually the character descriptions and set changes are what I've heretofore referred to as "minimalist", yet make no mistake that Maron is a fine writer who ...

Storm Track16 reviews
Margaret Maron

Mysterious Press, 2000

One of Maron's best
Storm Track takes place as a hurricane bears down on Colleton County. The stories of a minister having an affair with a local attorney, the murder of an unfaithful wife, and the approaching hurricane weave together, resulting in murder, attempted murder, and possible scandal. I liked the way Maron wove together her ending - without a fairy-tale happy ending, but instead a mature view of life's ...

Up Jumps the Devil (Deborah Knott Mysteries)8 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 1997

Great Reading!
I am new to this series and I just don't know how I missed it. It is a wonderful book and series and I love how Ms. Maron brings all the characters together, gives each of them such personality, and still brings us a great mystery. I am now obtaining all the books in this series so I can read it from start to finish. I would recommend it to all.

Home Fires (Deborah Knott Mysteries)8 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 2000

Wonderful
This author writes like an angel. The Deborah Knott series shows that mystery writing can be highly enjoyable and compelling without unnecessarily confusing plotting, gory crime scenes or characters that just take themselves too seriously. I would recommend this author and the Knott series to anyone looking for a good, cosy read. Needless to say, I am going to snap up all other books ...

Corpus Christmas3 reviews
Margaret Maron

Grand Central Publishing, 2006

This is not Deborah!
But it is good. I found this book - set in New York - to be a fun read. I enjoy Ms Maron's style of writing, so that didn't matter. The cast of characters is quirky and the art world was a far cry from the southern family style of the Knott mysteries. Over all I had fun with it and learned a thing or two.

Fugitive Colors (Sigrid Harald Mysteries)4 reviews
Margaret Maron

Mysterious Press, 1996

A fast moving Sigrid Harald mystery
I usually don't enjoy the Sigrid Harald series, she is a little too one dimensional. This novel, however makes her a real person and not a stick figure with all the really interesting people around her. The mystery is great and the book moves very quickly with a nice twist at the end. The characters-cops, artists, and gallery owners are all very quirky, making this a very easy book to read.

very entertaining. One of her better mysteries.
I've read 5 of Margaret Maron's books so far, and this rates up there with The Bootlegger's Daughter
