Review the novel, or the edition?
It's unfortunate that opinions regarding the story, Braddon's style, and/or Victorian novels in general make the little star rankings lower for this particular edition. In fact, the edition is quite good; the introduction is superb, the footnotes are very useful for those of us who easily forget our Classical references, and the appendices are chock full of relevant information. Like the story ...

A Great Gothic Tale
Having devoured Trollope, Willkie Collins, I happened onto Aurora Floyd and was truly surprised to find such an outstanding story so beautifully written. A dark secret revealed, a murder and a love story, this is a wonderful book.
Gothic Tales
Penguin Classics, 2007
"The curse - the curse!" I looked up in terror. In the great mirror opposite I saw myself, and right behind, another wicked, fearful self' An encounter with the supernatural in an everyday setting accentuates its strangeness; a truth used to eerie effect in Gaskell's Gothic tales. A portrait turned to the wall, a hidden manuscript, a mysterious child that lives on the freezing moors, a doppelganger formed by a woman's bitter curse: all of these ...

Isn't life like a novel in 3 volumes?
The Doctor's Wife is the 4th of Mary Elizabeth Braddon's novels which I have had the good fortune to read. There are 76 more, so, Oxford World's Classics, bring them on! In this, my favorite so far, the heroine reads novels and dreams of her life being like those heroines in her novels. She especially seems to have an affinity with Edith Dombey. Isabel marries a decent, honest, but not ...

A haunting and memorable tale
This is Braddon's best book, certainly of those that are currently available. Deceptively simple it is both haunting and beautiful with a heroine who is not only spirited and wilful but refreshingly so as Braddon was among the first to create such a character in 'sensational' literature. I would reccomend this absolutely, it is a truly beautiful book.

Excellent Victorian "sensation" novel
This book is full of intrigue and scheming, as a disinherited scoundrel and his mercenary friend plot to take over the family fortune. The novel also has interesting subplots involving secondary characters, that are all connected to the main story. If you liked "Lady Audley's Secret" or even "The Eustace Diamonds", you'll enjoy this book.
