Kepelino's: Traditions of Hawaii (Bernice P. Bishop Museum Bulletin)1 review

Bishop Museum Press, 2007

Highly recommended for what it is; difficult to interpret for what it is...
Kepelino was a Hawaiian man born around 1830. He was schooled by Catholic missionaries, traveled to Tahiti in 1847 to open a mission, and became a prolific contributor to Catholic newspapers and Hawaiian language newspapers. He also sided with Queen Emma in her fight for the Hawaiian throne; this effort had him jailed and sentenced to hang for treason (the first person so sentenced). He was ...

New Pocket Hawaiian Dictionary: With a Concise Grammar and Given Names in Hawaiian8 reviews
Mary Kawena Pukui, Samuel H. Elbert

University of Hawaii Press, 1992

A great little resource.
This book has around 11,000 words with adequate definitions. I like the fact that the people that compiled this dictionary included names and even a guide to assist in pronounciation. This nook is not an exhaustive researh on the Hawaiian language; but will greatly assist in research; Two Bears. Aloha nui loa (I love you very much).

E. S. Craighill Handy, Mary Kawena Pukui

Tuttle Pub, 1991

who we are and who we were
This is an excellent insight into what traditional Hawaiian life was like, addressing the normal activities in day to day life. Oral history is used throughout the book to bring forth specific stories as instances and examples. If one is interested in Hawaiian history(this is not mythology) this is highly recommended.

Tales of the menehune1 review
Mary Kawena Pukui

Kamehameha Schools Press, 1985

An excellent collection for family reading
This collection of legends is designed for school aged children to read alone, or for parents to read aloud. The tales are authentic Hawaiian folklore, not "disneyfied," touristy or cute -- but they are short, simply written, and child-friendly. Reading them aloud gives you a real sense of the power of storytelling... my seven-year-old sits spellbound, big-eyed and entranced, for tale after tale. ...
