All Aboard!4 reviews
Mary Lyn Ray, Amiko Hirao

Little, Brown Young Readers, 2002

An Outstanding and Original Achievement
Mr. Barnes, a slightly mysterious rabbit in a blue suit, goes on a train ride in this incredibly engaging and original book. "All Aboard" combines old-fashioned sensibilities (the first few pages evoked 1950's illustrations to me) with a rarely seen sophistication in the test and illustrations. I loved it. Amiko Hirao's dazzling pictures draw the reader right into the center of the story. You ...

A true story
Anna (not her real name) , in real life, is my great aunt - my grandmother's sister. I have been in "anna's" home many times and have many fond memories. "Uncle Luther" is the minister that married my mother and father in Old North Church in Wilmot, New Hampshire. My Grandfather was the president of the "Grange" for a while. I recall clearly going to the town dances in the Grange Hall ...

Welcome, Brown Bird3 reviews
Mary Lyn Ray

Harcourt Children's Books, 2004

great story for preserving our environment
I love this story because not only are the words easy for younger readers but also the message is a great one for the older readers as well. If I was a school teacher, I would definately use this in my classroom to promote a respect of nature. The pictures are beautiful and yet simple. A great find! (Make sure you read the info about the author. It helps explain the story a little).

Pumpkins: A Story for a Field6 reviews
Mary Lyn Ray

Voyager Books, 1996

Awesome book for third graders
I use this book each year to teach my class about different countries and means of travel. I made up math related questions for small group work that includes estimating how many pumpkins could fit on/in each means of travel, How many for sale signs the man had to make, the children time themselves writing out the for sale sign that was attached to each pumpkin. Each child also uses ...

Red Rubber Boot Day4 reviews
Mary Lyn Ray

Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media, 2005

Just Fantastic!!
"Red Rubber Boot Day" is a feast of color and poetry. This was my daughter's favorite book as a 3-year-old, and it is regularly read and enjoyed by us both several years later. The pictures are exuberant, and the text really does make you smell the rain! I have never seen this book in a bookstore so it would make a most delightful and surprising gift for a book lover.

The end of the collection
This beautiful book was the last one Barbara Cooney illustrated before her death in March of 2000. The story and pictures are great. A must-have for Cooney fans.

Alvah and Arvilla2 reviews
Mary Lyn Ray

Harcourt Children's Books, 1994

The best kind of childrens book
I would like to see this book back in print because it is the sweet and simple story of friendship (and love). Alvah and Arvilla teach us how to hold onto our dreams in the real world. This story is a day at the beach beautifully illustrated and charmingly packaged to last a life time.

Voyager Books, 2001

Magnificent Mud
For everyone who can't wait for winter to recede; for everyone who loves the smell of rain on warm dirt; for everyone who relishes squishing mud between their toes comes this eye level view of mud emerging with the spring thaw. Preschoolers delight in the dirty feet splashing through the mud. This is a great addition to a collection about the seasons. The illustrations lend themselves to ...

Christmas Farm1 review
Mary Lyn Ray

Harcourt Children's Books, 2008

A nice holiday story
Wilma is getting tired of planting sunflowers and petunias in her garden. So, she's looking around for a change. When she goes out to cut down her annual Christmas tree, Wilma knows what she's going to grow in her garden: Christmas trees. So, she places an order for sixty-two dozen balsam seedlings, and gathers string, shovels, and her five-year-old neighbor, Parker. Year after year, Wilma and ...

A Rumbly Tumbly Glittery Gritty Place
Mary Lyn Ray

Harcourt, 1993

A simple, poetic text and lively illustrations evoke a child's view of a rural gravel pit, full of all kinds of rocks, that the adults think is ugly but that the children find fascinating and beautiful.
