A new look at African American history
When we think of the Civil Rights movement we reflect on the efforts of Martin Luther King, Jr. and all of the great challenges of the 1960s and 1970s. Professor Mary Ward takes us through a time before the movement where the foundation for social progress was being realized. A Mission for Justice is a detailed look at the struggles of the African American people by way of the Black church. I ...

Eleven Beautiful Stories About Love, Life, and Death
Mary Ward Brown's second collection of stories is a terrific read. These 11 stories (ten set in Alabama, one in Russia) are heartwarming, thought provoking, and very human (not to mention well written). They run the emotional gamut that can cover a lifetime and in each there's a sense that something more important than life itself is at stake (often this reminder comes in the form of death or ...

A Must Read
In the Fall of 2004, when I realized my son would be deploying to Iraq for the 2nd time, I began searching the internet once again for ANYTHING relating to the 3rd ID. My search led me to Mary Ward of Marehaven Productions. A review of her book, "Letters Home" by Ron Martz of the Atlanta Journal Constitution caught my eye because he had been embedded with my son's Company on the Thunder Run to ...

Key Results
Dr. Ward authors an excellent vision that translates the best of abstract educational-change theories into a concrete prescription to improve school facilities, student achievement, and fiscal efficiency. Improving Achievement in Low-Performing Schools is an excellent guide to turn a district that is culturally, academically, financially, and technologically bankrupt into a high-performance ...

ahead of its time
It's hard not to envision the Oscar-winning movie while reading Snake Pit, but the book provides less Hollywood romance and a greater sense of the protagonist's disorientation. Her struggle to swim toward sanity's shore is palpable. The prose is terse but not always gripping; yet it convinces. An insightful, personal documentation of psychiatric institutions in its day and of mental illness ...

An invaluable reprint of the 1916 edition.
This is an invaluable reprint of the 1916 edition of Mary Lanier's 1884 collection, which is only marred by a certain over-solicitousness for the poet's fame that depreciates the early poems and the jolly, Twainy "dialect" poems, whice rise to Frost in "Thar's more in the Man than thar is in the Land." Sidney Lanier saw the Real through "Christ's crystal" clear as the great fourth stanza of "Song ...

Coffee and this book
As a coffee lover, I just had to read this book. Mary Ward did a great job. Not only did she give some very tasty recipes but she gave good advise on serving coffee too. My favorite recipe in this book would have to be orange coffee. It was so good like many other recipes in this book.

A wonderful storyteller
I just heard Miss Brown give a reading from this volume, and I must say it was a very well-told story. I heard her described as the "First Lady of Alabama Letters" and I think we're doing well if that is the case.

A Disappointment
I was expecting something more scholarly I suppose. The Gourmet Atlas contains: some great maps of the migration of foodstuffs; recipes which look good; time-lines; charts and some wonderful photos and pretty pictures. But this visual appeal is at the expense of the text, which I found light-weight, and the writing is sometimes confusing. If you are serious about food then this is lacking in ...

Nice "choose your own adventure" book
This is an ok book, in the beging you [human], and two other youths in your village [demi-humans; lizard & monkey] are chosen to go on a quest to prove your manhood. The quest is to go investigate this mountain where a strange light is showing. There are a lot of bad endings [aka the story ending soon because you didn't choose the right path]. I like the main characters, and I like some of the ...
