Beautiful words, beautiful drawings
"Spirit of the Siskiyous" is a rare, precious book by a woman with a keen sense of observation and perception. Not only can she translate her knowledge and insights in words, but she can also enhance her writing with drawings and watercolors that visually capture the often profound subtilities of flowers, seasons, bugs and birds. The book is one to be read slowly so that it can be enjoyed ...

A Book to Savor
This is an amazing book which should be read by all those who enjoy British literature. It is a touching, romantic story. The writing is sensual in that there are sounds, smells, sights, tastes and textures to be experienced in its textual descriptions. The natural setting almost becomes a "character" in and of itself because you could not take the story out of the beautiful, natural, country ...

Very Helpful
I consider myself to be a "limbo" knitter. I know more than the basics but not as much as an advanced knitter. I have aspirations to be a well rounded knitter and I found this book to be very helpful. I was taught to knit by by grandmother and she didn't use any terminology beyong "take this loopy doop and squinch it over on the other needle". While this makes perfect sense to an eight year old, ...

AN EXCELLENT READ
This is a truly inspirational book and extremely well written. It focuses on the life of two people after the Civil War and the struggles they endured and gives the reader hope and encouragement for a better tomorrow in the world we live. Those principles applied at that time as well as today. The book is a comfort to the hurting in today's world.

Precious Bane
A little forgotten treasure I added to my small collection. There is something uplifting in this strange version of romance. The descriptive paragraphs I usually skip over in other books seem to be the whole point in understanding Prue Sarn. I love the strange long gone culture and the too real darkness defeated. The outcome may seem simple but to me the characters and the writing are not. ...

Review of Harbrace College Handbook (Revised 13th Edition)
I have used the Harbrace College Handbook for 31 years. My first was the 5th Edition, which I keep on the top in one of my desk drawers. I used it throughout college. I bought this edition for my father, who gave me the first one, and seems to have lost his own copy (he's 86!). This edition is much thicker than the 5th one -- these books are not exactly "reading material," but a reference ...

A haunting book about love and loss
This is another of Mary Webb's exquisitely crafted books, this time without the happy ending of Precious Bane. Hazel is a carefully sketched heroine whose character tugs at the heartstrings. One of those books that demands illustrations and close reading to enjoy.

For My Desert Island
If I were told I could only ever read one more book I would have to re-read "Precious Bane" by Mary Webb. It has been my favourite book for over a quarter of a century. British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin wrote of this book: " Precious Bane is a revelation not of unearthly but of earthly beauty in one bit of the England of Waterloo, the Western edge, haunted with the shadows of superstition, ...
