Saving Junk, I can do.
Environmental Art for Kids, the sub-title. I like that. But what does it mean? This book takes kids outdoors to collect "stuff" from nature, like leaves and pinecones, or indoors to collect "stuff" like envelopes and newspaper. Once collected, there are about 150 projects for open-ended things to make with them. I especially liked making a "leaf burst" with supple autumn leaves and paint. I ...

I never realized how beautiful science can be.
I had never really thought how beautiful and mysterious and colorful and delightful science could be. This book inspires me, a person who has never really liked science all that much. Now I do! And I will pass that on to my kids when we do the Chromatography Art Experiment and separate colors on absorbant paper. Can't wait!

So wonderful it's coming out in Spanish too!
I have loved this book for a long time - TONS of great activities and kids really love getting squishy. The Peanut Butter Playdough recipe is worth it alone! Now I heard that Bright Ring Publishing is putting this book out in a Bilingual Spanish Edition! I can't wait to use it in the classroom! What a wonderful resource and bold move! Bravo! And thank you from all of my Spanish-speaking students! ...

Author comments, by MaryAnn F. Kohl
Would you like to bring happiness and creativity and brain development and fun, all rolled into one big wonderful ball of exploration, into your child's life? Drawing is a good place to start. Research says that children who draw on a regular basis do better in reading and math than those who do not draw. All you need is blank paper and a crayon or pencil. Seriously. That's all you need! But if ...

More like Adventurous!
This book is my kids' favorite! Everything is either very LARGE and exciting, or SILLY and exciting, or ADVENTUROUS and exciting, or extremely INTERESTING and exciting. Don't buy this if you want your child to sit in a corner with crayons for the rest of her/his life and never look beyond the expected. This is for the kids that will challenge their imaginations and explore art from a new view, ...

No TV tonight!
I think I will try weaving a big yarn web in our tv room tonight (just like the book suggests! ), and turn off that ol' TV. It will be a whole lot better for the kids (and us) than watching Third Rock from the Sun, don't you think? I'm excited about the variety of pretend and play ideas in this book, and am especially interested in the chapter that gives pretending projects and activities to ...

Author Comments, from MaryAnn
Childhood is a time for exploration, discovery, experimentation....thus, the process of art has always outweighed the final product in its value and focus. But it's also true that elementary aged kids are taking a new interest in the results of their explorations. That is, they enjoy the outcomes of their work in art. The art works in Primary Art will be valued as "unique results", not as ...

Comments from the Author, MaryAnn F. Kohl
The art projects in this book are excerpted from the national best-seller Preschool Art, but all redone and illustrated in a smaller version at a nice low price. Collage is just about kids' favorite thing to do from an early age... just glue and glue and paste and tape things, like scrap paper, feathers, buttons, stickers, glitter, things collected from nature like shells and pinecones, and so ...

A hit with the kids!
We all loved "Cooking Art" but especially my children. They loved looking through the illustrations, making the recipes and especially eating their "creations". One of their favorites was the "Zucchini Train". There's just something special about eating something that you yourself have created. Even my finicky eater licked his plate clean! The recipes are easy to do and if you don't have one ...

I think kids love clay and dough more than any other art medium ... and this book gives you ideas for making your own recipes with the kids, and then exploring how the doughs/mixtures react, and also making things!! The book also has some other sculpture projects thatkids love and are excellent for birthday parties or classrooms alike. These are some of my favorite ideas of all!! I hope you will ...

Literacy and Art, a greatly inspired team
Kids favorite books inspire easy art activities for kids. Excellent. I've found that when the kids do art projects that relate to their favorite picture books, they like their books more and want to read them more closely, and more often. They become finely tuned to the illustrations, and certainly this is an inspiration to create their own art. I've got some favorites in this book. One of them ...

Love those Kohl books.
I enjoy all of MaryAnn F. Kohl's books, and this one is a little different than her others as it has a bit more in the way of finished products, though they are all arrived at by discovering and creating. Still, this book works well for those older kids who want a little more "fact" in their art. My favorite chapter revolves around Asian projects, in particular those from Japan.
