Even a Yankee fan loved this one!
I'm intrigued to read about the history of baseball. Especially, history I was not able to witness! This Yankee fan loves this 1! All the members of the organization are covered, not just Gil Hodges, Tommie Agee, & Tom Seaver. The fringe players- J.C. Martin, Ron Taylor, Wayne Garrett, Ed Charles, etc. are just as important.

Punish Patriotism With Death And Obliviion
While watching the hit war movie, "Saving Private Ryan," I had a vivid flash memory of a book I had read a few months ago. It was "China Spy" by Maury and Janet Allen. The linkage should not have surprised me. The hero of the Allen book isn't fiction ... he was a young Irish-American paratrooper who fought bravely and ... like Steven Spielberg's fictional Private Ryan, survived the blood ...
Jackie Robinson: A life remembered

Essential for learning about Mr. Robinson
An interesting approach to an autobiography, "Jackie Robinson A Life Remembered" is a crisply written bio by one of the best baseball writers ever, Maury Allen. What makes this interesting for me, was the personal recollections from his teammates and contemporaries, interspersed with linking passages by Allen. It flows surprisingly well, and reads lightning quick, nearly as quick as the subject's ...

Bo Knows Baseball
The great thing about reading a baseball biography written before "Ball Four", is that while many things are written about, much is left to the readers imagination. Bo Belinsky was one of the great off the field baseball characters, and his story, played out in early 1960's until he left baseball in the early 1970's is a raucous, rollicking, irrepressable tale of mediocre pitching, surrounded ...

Excellent blend of narrative and interviews honor Maris
Maury Allen's book is a touching tribute to one of baseball's greatest players. Written in part to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Roger Maris' 61 in `61 home run feat, it honors the tormented athlete with memories from the people who knew him best. Family, friends, and teammates reflect on and remember the man who was loved and hated for toppling Babe Ruth's home run record. Most of ...

AN EXCELLENT SALUTE TO A HERO
THE MICK HAS BEEN THE HERO IN MY LIFE FOR 35 YEARS. THIS BOOK IS AN EXCELLENT ACCOUNT OF HIS CAREER IN PICTURES AND NARRATION. MR. ALLEN SHOWS THE GREATNESS OF MICK AS A PLAYER AND THE HUMANESS OF HIM AS A PERSON. THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR EVERYONE WHO WORSHIPPED THE MICK. HE IS STILL A HERO AND A VERY BRAVE MAN WHO WAS AT HIS BEST NEAR THE END OF HIS LIFE. HATS OFF TO THE MICK AND THIS WONDERFUL ...

LOU HAS WRITTEN A REAL SWEET BOOK
THIS IS A VERY GOOD READ. LOU DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING HIS CAREER IN BASEBALL. THE MOST INTERESTING IS CONCERNING THE TIME SPENT WITH THE YANKEES IN THE BRONX ZOO BOTH AS A PLAYER AND A MANAGER. LOU WAS ALWAYS A SOLID PLAYER WHO WORKED HARD. THIS IS A GOOD READ AND VERY RECOMMENDED.

A 4-bagger
First, I am not a Yankees fan, but they have had some great players over the years and Mantle is, arguably, one of the best, and I have always admired his considerable talent. Everyone knows his statistics and how he liked to party, but I was looking for some insights into the man, and this book delivered. The book is a series of reminiscences by teammates, opponents, writers, friends and people ...

MAURY ALLEN IS A NATIONAL TREASURE
Now that Jim Murray and Leonard Koppett are gone, Maury Allen may be the greatest literary link to our storied sports past. The man is a treasure. He has more first-hand knowledge of great sporting events of the past 50 years than any single writer, and this latest book is just another example of a terrific scribe at work. Bravo! A good book -well worth5.00 $
A good read if you remember the 1970s thru 2000 Yankees. Maury Allen is a bit full of himself (he refused to vote for Thurman Munson for the Hall of Fame because HE did not like him as a person) and repeats some lines thought the book. It's well worth the basement price of 5.00 (new) you find around town.

Classic "keeper" (with reservations)
A very handy, readable, and re-readable work, though be careful to note that the subtitle is "A Personal Ranking Of The Best Players in Baseball History", so it's got that *subjective* element. He lists Babe Ruth (pause) third, though he names him the best left-handed hitter in BB history and the third best left-handed pitcher in BB history. So that means he believes that his Number One, Willie ...

Dutton Adult

Jackie Robinson biographer Jules Tygiel has compiled a powerful batting order of prominent writers and those who knew Robinson first-hand--including Roger Kahn, Red Barber, black sportswriter Wendell Smith, Robinson's Olympic-medalist brother Mack, even Malcolm X and Jackie Robinson himself. Their perspectives help pierce the shadow cast by the legend and shed real light on the man. Barber's poignant recollection of his personal battle with ...

A real insider's view of a player with great mystique
I loved this book! From the first chapter, where Lefty Gomez is talking about pitching against Joe D when he was only a kid with the San Francisco Seals. and this "amateur" gets two doubles off him, to the parts about Marilyn Monroe, which I think everybody on earth is interested in, this book had me hooked. I couldn't help but wonder how Mr. Allen got such personal and intimate information ...
