Meet Addy: An American Girl (The American Girls Collection Book 1) 44 reviews Connie Porter
Pleasant Company, 1993
A Brave Girl...Nakaissia's Review It was an exciting story. I wanted to read it a lot. It was brave of her to keep her feelings inside and try to help her family to get to freedom. I am glad that she made it through, because I'm not sure I would have. I recommend this book for girls and boys, and even adults, as it's really good.

Leola And The Honeybears 8 reviews
Cartwheel, 1999
Down home story-telling This book is a wonderful addition to your home library whether you have a youngster or not. My 3-year-old daughter actually received this book as a present from her nana and made her read it about 5 times that same evening. It is a delightful re-telling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears that you don't mind reading over and over again (as most children insist that you do). The southern flavor ...

Addy Learns a Lesson: A School Story (American Girls Collection) 4 reviews Connie Porter
American Girl, 1993
An Informative book! This is a wonderful story that brings a part of the past back to life. It is told from a view point that is not often heard from, a young black girl who was a slave and has escaped, but doesn't know how to read or write. It also tells a story of the hardship of a black family during this time and the story of friendship that applies to all races. I think the character Addy is one girls will ...

Beans on the Roof (Young Piper) 3 reviews Betsy Byars
Macmillan Children's Books, 1991
Betsy Byars Best Ever I worked as a school librarian for a number of years and this is my favorite Betsy Byars book of all. It is a tender, yet funny, story of how every child has talents and is worthy of love. It's a great read-aloud or independent reader -- I used it for third grade on up.

Minnie Saves the Day : The Adventures of Minnie 4 reviews Melodye Benson Rosales
Little, Brown, 2001
A wonderful mix of fantasy and history I picked this book up because it reminded me of the Raggedy Ann and Andy books. (I enjoy American children's fantasy literature from the first half of the 20th century.) Ms. Rosales' book is absolutely charming. It is filled with magic, the innocence of childhood and a fascinating bit of history. A difficult combination but very well done. When will Minnie's next adventure be available?

Jackson Jones and the Puddle of Thorns (Jackson Jones) 1 review Mary Quattlebaum
Cover to Cover Cassettes, 1995
Jackson Jones is a delightful summer read ! Jackson Jones and the Puddle of Thorns was a delightful, fun story. Jackson and his friends were real. They spoke like real kids, fought like real friends and had tender, loving hearts....like real kids. I used this book as an opening novel for my summer school class of 4th and 5th graders...mainly boys. They loved it!! We planted a "puddle of thorns" at our school as a follow-up, and had ...
