Close to Shore: The Terrifying Shark Attacks of 191645 reviews

Excellent book for elementary and middle school
What I liked the best is the descriptions of the shark attacks were detailed, but not graphic. My son is into sharks at the moment, so this book was perfect. While it retells the story of the Great White Shark on our East Coast with lots os sequential details, there are enough "shark attacks" described to keep the kids interested. We skipped around. Pictures are boring, but we bought it ...

Terrorized on the Beach
For a sea shore vacation in 2007 I brought a few books to read "on the beach". This one turned out to be a fascinating and well presented historical narrative of the 1916 white shark attacks along the New Jersey shore. Well to say the least I was riveted to my beach chair and did not venture too far into the surf while I was reading this book. The author has done a great deal of historical and ...

Mutts: America's Dogs15 reviews
Brian Kilcommons, Michael Capuzzo

Grand Central Publishing, 1996

My dogs..
I always have to describe my dogs in terms of purebreds. This has never sat well with me. My dog is a mutt. She is medium sized, fluffy and white. This satisfies none of her admirers - she has to be part border collie or australian shepherd in order to slake their curiousity. What is is it with people, why does breeding matter? Yep, she probably has some border collie in her, but she cannot/will ...

Cat Caught My Heart: Stories of Wisdom, Hope, and Purrfect Love3 reviews
Michael Capuzzo, Teresa Banik Capuzzo

Bantam, 1998

life with cats
If you love cats, you will love this book. It's all about real people's relationships with their cats. The stories are funny and sad and sometimes amazing, but they are consistently touching. And contrary to the previously review, the stories are NOT all about cats dying!

Our Best Friends: Wagging Tales to Warm the Heart5 reviews
Michael Capuzzo

Bantam, 1999

I am one of the authors of this collection of dog stories.
I wrote "The Life Retrievers." It is the autobiographical story of how my father's Labrador Retriever took care of me while my mother abused and severely neglected me when I was a toddler. Duchess also saved me from a charging black bear. I was a co-winner of Mike Capuzzo's "Great American Dog Contest." My story is referred to in the Kirkus review as "dogs who rescue others from abuse." ...

Mutts America's Dogs : America's Dogs1 review
Brian Kilcommons, Michael Capuzzo, 1996

Terrific book!
This is a book I find myself reading again and again just because it's so entertaining. The breed information is accurate, as would be expected from Brian Kilcommons, but the presentation is often "howlingly," laugh-out-loud funny. This is a great book for anyone who loves dogs, and mutts in particular.

Cat Caught My Heart: Purrfect Tales of Wisdom, Hope, and Love2 reviews
Michael Capuzzo

Bantam, 1999

Storeis to warm your heart
If you love cats, you will love this book, which is a collection of true stories about cats and the people they love. You'll laugh and you'll cry as you remember how many of the stories also happened to you and your cat. When you're finished, you will want to get another cat, or at least feel compelled to send a donation to the nearest shelter.
