The best book to begin with
If I had it all to do over again I would begin fly-fishing by reading this book. It's title tells the truth. The book is obviously written for the beginning fly-fisher but that does not mean it is light-weight in its information. Rutter & Card give very solid information and explain it throughly enough for it to become easy to understand. The book is full of black and white pictures and ...

If you have asked God, "Why?" look for help here
I have loved Michael Card's music for years. His songs are not just musically interesting, but spiritually challenging. They make me think about who God is, who I am in Him,what does He want from my life, and how do I respond to the gift of salvation through Christ? I should have known that his books would be the same. He is not just a singer, not just an author, he is a scholar - and, ...

Outstanding book and powerful insight into Revelation.
Scotty Smith has done an outstanding job of making Revelation applicable to the common reader. His insight into the concepts that permeate the Book of Revelation offer guidance for personal and corporate worship. So many writers deal with issues about Revelation that are either bad theology or dwell on minutia. This book uncovers the pratical nature of Revelation and its relevance to the ...

Great book for family reading at Christmas
I have used this book for two years during Advent to read aloud to my family as we finish dinner. My 12 year-old at first thought it was silly, but she is always captivated by the stories. I like the blend of fiction, nonfiction, sentimental, and compelling selections. We have learned about Christmas for some Civil War soldiers, read some old classics such as The Gift of the Magi, and ...

excellent reflective devotional
For anyone not familier with his music, this book will be an excellent introduction into a true wordsmith. Card is able to give insight into the life of Christ, born of a deep faith, and enhanced through a study of the Word. The words to the songs are followed by stories, either fictional reflections of "might have been," or personal refelctions from his own life, which give the reader a place to ...

Mallowcups for Mike
Yes, okay, Michael's book is great and I had quite an eloquent review in mind. Then I got to the letter by Harold Best at the end of the book and forgot all about it: get this book for those pages alone. And for Calvin Seerveld's letter, and for the letter from the art guy from New York, and from the Dutch guy. Mallowcups will of course be credited to Mike's account because he had the--what? ...
The Parable Of Joy - Reflections On The Wisdom Of The Book Of John

Great to encourage reflection on John
This book is an in-depth look at the gospel of John. Each chapter begins with a translated passage from the gospel, then goes into commentary or reflective writing - some of which imagines the events as they could have been, not necessarily as they were. When I first read this book some years ago, it made John my favorite of the gospels and infused my thinking about Jesus with all kinds of ...
Close Your Eyes So You Can See: Stories of Children in the Life of Jesus

A book with deep feeling for little ones.
This book takes stories from the life of Jesus and retells them through the eyes of an "as if" child who is present. Each story is told through the eyes of a different pretend child. There is one picture at the beginning of each story and the story lasts on average 2-3 pages, so the attention span of your really little preschoolers may not last. However, it makes the stories more personal for ...

New Edition of one of author's best
Sharply designed new soft cover edition of this book takes Tuesdays WIth Morrie to a spiritual place. Best reason to buy this edition is the inclusion of a CD of Michael Card and his mentor Bill Lane taken from a Moody Radio broadcast before Dr. Bill Lane's death. The book creates a holy hunger in the reader for pursuing relationships such as Card and Lane have known. While you always have a ...

A great guide for finding dry hikes in Washington State
I like hiking in nice weather. Don't we all? But in the Pacific Northwest, if you are forced to wait for the sun, you may not hike much at all. You can hedge your bets by hiking on the lee side - the rain shadow - of Pacific Northwest mountains. At least on days when it's drizzling around Puget Sound, there will be an excellent chance of dry - if not downright sunny - weather, on the range's far ...

Fly Fishing Made Easy
Of all the beginning fly fishing books I own or have read, I like this one the best. I find that most all of my questions are answered in this book and still refer back to it when I forget something. I first owned the 3rd edition and the 4th has been updated with gear and methods not available in the earlier editions. If you are just getting started, this is not a bad place to begin.

A multifaceted gem of a book!
I finished this book in only 3 days because I couldn't stop reading, I loved it! Card uncovers personal perspectives about Peter and about Jesus. Some highlights (among MANY) that struck me: WHEN Peter tried to walk on water: "The lesson is that Peter needed to sink in order to take that next step of faith in Jesus. Because walking on the water does not ultimately increase our faith, only ...

Art and the Bible... Certainly one of my favorite reads
Many people might want to analyze this work to death on an intellectual level. To examine the author's language for rhythm and music, to look for the high in the best of essays and speeches. They would have missed the point. There is such an ugliness to so many subjects now. Everything seems mixed in a bad way, and no single subject seems to offer a note or a page or an element of clarity. ...

A sound collection of Card's short stories
I've always loved collections of short stories, especially when the author includes introductions and afterwords to his works. It really gives the reader a chance to see into the mind of the writer, and to understand what he is all about. Maps in a Mirror succeeds admirably in bringing together the huge spectrum of Orson Scott Card's short stories. For the most part, the stories are ...

Listen to a well crafted story
For me there is nothing better than listening to a book on CD while chewing up a lot of asphalt during a road trip. I discovered this little gem 'Ender's Shadow, at the local library and became an addict to Ender, Bean, and the Shadow series as a result. For those of you that think you have to read or listen to Ender's Game first, don't worry Bean and his story stand up all by themselves with no ...

Drawn into worship
The combination of Michael Card's words and Timothy Bott's colour and calligraphy make "Joy in the Journey" much more than a pleasant book to look at, but rather a truly remarkable book for meditation and reflection. As Card's words are given new life and depth by Bott's calligraphic illustrations, so Bott's work is given new quality by the power of the words. The result is that the reader is ...

When there are no words...
..Michael Card is one of the few who has the insight to find some. The subject of lament is a diffult one. How do we offer our tears, fustrations and sometimes anger to God as a worship offering. Michael Card deals with this subject with wisdom from the life of Job, David, Jeremiah and finally Jesus. I was fortunate to attend a retreat where Michael Card walked thirty of us through this book and ...

This music is easy to play and very singable. We didn't wind up using the song out of here that we wanted but only due to time restraint and not because of inferior quality of the material.

Dragon Quintet
An abiding presence in myth and literature from around the world, the dragon has been reborn in 20th-century fantasy fiction. The classic winged fire-breathing reptile often associated with evil tends nowadays to be more disposed to humankind, sometimes aloofly offering magical wisdom, sometimes actively involved in human lives, whether as servants or friends. For this exclusive SFBC ...
