Michael S. Gazzaniga

Ecco, 2008

Essential to Understanding Human Behavior
To understand human social behavior it is necessary to be familiar with most (if not all) of the material Michael Gazzaniga covers in this seminal summary of how humans are alike and different from other animals. Since Dr. Gazzaniga is not only a pioneering neuroscientist, but also an accomplished writer noted for his ability to render scientific material understandable and entertaining, there is ...

An important acquisition for any collection concerned with medical or scientific ethical issues.

Excellent
Research in cognitive neuroscience has exploded in the last two decades, mostly due to the rise of experimental techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission topography, but also due to the ability now to simulate neuronal behavior computationally. This book, written by leading experts in the field is written for the student in mind, so anyone with a strong curiosity about ...

The No-Salt, Lowest-Sodium Cookbook59 reviews
Donald A. Gazzaniga

St. Martin's Griffin, 2002

A great beginner's guide
This book has changed my life. I was 29 (3 years ago) when I bought it hoping to reduce my sodium intake in an effort to lower my blood pressure. Exercise was not working and my doc wanted to put me on medication. After a year of hard work, I went from 140/95 to 120/75 and I owe most of it to the philosophy of this book. I don't necassarily agree with many other reviews that this is the "end ...

The Ethical Brain20 reviews
Michael S. Gazzaniga

Dana Press, 2005

Thinking without thinking
"The Ethical Brain" is a well written and easly understood book, but somewhat academic in nature. It covers both the known areas of brain function and discusses much of the unkown process of the brain. Excellent reading. However, the book "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell should be read after reading "The Ethical Brain". These two books complement each other.

The No-Salt, Lowest-Sodium Light Meals Book4 reviews
Donald A. Gazzaniga, Maureen A. Gazzaniga

St. Martin's Griffin, 2006

Salt is the Cause; Not the Solution
There's an old Texan story about a Texican who goes into a general store that is having a closing sale. He sees that a whole wall of the store is stacked with nothing but buffalo pucky and salt: bags of buffalo pucky and bags of salt, blocks of buffalo pucky and blocks of salt, shakers of buffalo pucky and shakers of salt. Just buffalo pucky and salt from floor to ceiling (everything's big in ...

Mind Matters: How Mind and Brain Interact to Create Our Conscious Lives1 review
Michael S. Gazzaniga

Houghton Mifflin (P), 1989

Not the best book on this topic but still good
Maybe the most important thing to note about this book is that it was written in 1988, and research on mind and brain have expanded a lot since then. Which isn't to say the material here is wrong, just that it doesn't include the very latest advances. Still, ya gotta start somewhere, and this book isn't a bad one to read along the way. Gazzaniga tells stories illustrating how fiddling with ...

The Social Brain: Discovering the Networks of the Mind1 review
Michael S. Gazzaniga

Basic Books, 1985

The real story behind left brain / right brain psychology.
Gazzaniga conducted some of the first research on split-brain phenomenon, from which popular culture got the whole left brain - right brain thing. If you are interested in that and think you know what it's all about, take the time to read this short explanation of how the research was conducted and what the author himself makes of it. It's really worthwhile. There are a great many ...

Nature's Mind: Biological Roots Of Thinking, Emotions, Sexuality, Language, And Intelligence1 review
Michael Gazzaniga

Basic Books, 1994

clinical psychologist
Gazzaniga presents a fine example of two behavioral principles: 1. The Peter principle. Gazzaniga over-extends way beyond his range of expertise, using a narrow and outmoded cognitive focus to try to explain just about all of the mind and human psychological functioning. 2. "Once you're well-known you can get anything published." The book is padded and says very little -- just about nothing ...

Thomas Dunne Books, 2007

The Cognitive Neurosciences III: Third Edition (Bradford Books)4 reviews

The MIT Press, 2004

Fascinating
This (sizable) book is the third in a series of updates that are published every five years and whose goal is to delineate in as much detail as possible the status of research in cognitive neuroscience. Cognitive neuroscience has become an exciting field in the last fifteen years, this due in large part to the experimental techniques available to researchers. In addition, researchers in cognitive ...

Thomas Dunne Books, 2003

Conversations in the Cognitive Neurosciences1 review

The MIT Press, 1996

"Neuro-what????"
In 1989, the PBS series NOVA had an hour-long conversation with the late physicist Richard Feynman, in which he extolled on his passion for the scientific enterprise. The interview was animated, enlightening, and entertaining. (Clips from this interview circulate the Internet.) I was hoping that this book would present similarly animated and passionate discussions. However, Gazzaniga ...
