Going to the Hospital (First Experiences)3 reviews

Usborne Books, 2005

A MUST-HAVE if your child to going to the hospital
When my son was going to have tubes put in his ears and his Adnoids removed, we purchased this book. He was just barely 3 years old, but this book explained on HIS level everything that was going to happen to him (from the little boy's ear first hurting, to everything that happens at the hospital before and after the surgery). We took the book to the hospital and he pointed out to me where ...

Going to the Dentist3 reviews
Anne Civardi

Usborne Books, 2005

We brought this book with us to the Emergency Room!
I got this book for my son (he was 2 1/2 yr. at the time) so he would be prepared for the dentist when we went. He loved the book and wanted to read it over AND over, and loved finding the duck that is hidden in some of the pages. But it came SO helpful when my son cut his lip open and he had to go to the ER to get stiches. Before we left I grabbed this book to read while we were there because I ...

Stories from Around the World (Mini Classics)1 review
Heather Amery

E.D.C. Publishing, 2002

Great Book
We bought this book for our 3-year old as an alternative to her usually favorite princess and fairy stories, and she loves it! There are stories from different cultures, and she loves picking stories from the map on the inside cover. The artwork is also beautiful.

Moving House (Usborne First Experiences)2 reviews
Anne Civardi, Michelle Bates

Usborne Books, 2005

Wonderful pictures, simple story - great for preschoolers
We purchased this book to assist our son, who is almost 3, with our upcoming overseas move. While this book is not geared towards overseas moves, the pictures of the parents sorting their belongings, items going into a moving truck, and items being unloaded into a new home are wonderful. Our son has requested that we read this book many times -- it is in his "favorites" rotation.

Plastic Cameras: Toying with Creativity13 reviews
Michelle Bates

Focal Press, 2006

Excellent resource for the non-digital photographer
As someone who has been involved with digital photography for over 10 years, I first became curious about 'plastic' cameras after seeing an exhibition of the author's work a few years ago. The images were hauntingly beautiful and I was surprised to find out they were completely un-touched by any digital process. Holgas, one of the models that form the centerpiece of this book, can produce a ...

The Complete Book of First Experiences4 reviews
Anne Civardi

Help Kids Understand
This collection contains all of the First Experiences books (Going to the Hospital, Going to the Doctor, Going to School, Going to the Dentist, The New Baby, Moving House, The New Puppy, Going on a Plane, Going to a Party). The volume is a smaller format than the individual books, but still large enough for proper reading. Each of the tales tries to give a well-rounded picture of what to ...

Usborne First Experiences The New Baby (First Experiences)3 reviews
Anne Civardi

Usborne Books, 2005

and baby makes three
This small book has a lot going for it. The storyline is straightforward, the illustrations are funny, and the book doesn't get bogged down in what kids might (or might not) feel toward their new sibling. It also shows mama nursing the baby, which can be difficult to find in children's books. Recommended, especially for families expecting a third child.

Gay Marriage, Real Life: Ten Stories Of Love And Family2 reviews
Michelle Bates Deakin

Skinner House Books, 2006

Love and courage shine through the writing
As someone who benefited from the ruling that made same-sex marriage legal in Massachusetts, it amazes me that I have not come across stories like these before. Love triumphs in this book about gay couples who are diverse, courageous, thoughtful, all having taken the journey to be true to themselves. Often, one member of the couple lost their family's approval in the process, and yet they ...

Racing Vacation (Sandy Lane Stables)1 review
Michelle Bates

Usborne Books, 2003

racing vacation
This book was okay, but parts of it were kind of corny. Like breaking into Joe Hagan's farm and all that stuff with Paula. I thought it was pretty dumb how they made a big deal about how big of a racing farm Graytops was, I mean it only had 15 horses at it. That's pretty tiny compared to most barns. Oh well, overall it was a pretty good book.

Susannah Leigh

E.D.C. Publishing, 2003

A terrific puzzle workbook similar to Where's Waldo!
This is an entertaining workbook that teaches a child to focus, remember and identify items on colorful pages. The story is very entertaining and the skills developed here will lead to good study habits and strong attention to detail. My 6-year old and I laughed and had such fun as he found the items and solved the puzzles. Excellent busy work for a trip!

The New Baby (First Experiences)6 reviews
Anne Civardi, Michelle Bates

E.D.C. Publishing, 2001

My two-year-old LOVES this book!
My son loves to read this book again and again. My family has home births, so the book isn't very close to our own experiences, but the book works great as a starting point for further discussions. I like the fact that the book presents a realistic view of what it's like to have a baby in the house. I was four when my own sister was born, and I expected her to come home from the hospital and ...
