Scandanavia: The Rough Guide, Fourth Edition (1997 (4th ed))2 reviews
Jules Brown, Mick Sinclair

Rough Guides, 1997

better for a second trip
this guide highlights the most essential sights for a tourist, but I think it is better on a second trip to Scandinavia when one already has an idea of the lay of the land. some other guides have better maps, but this guide doesn't waste time on sights that aren't essential. Like all titles in this series, it focuses on the best places to visit and isn't afraid to say something is a waste of your ...

San Francisco - City Pack1 review
Mick Sinclair

Aguilar, 1999

Good guide for those unfamiliar with San Francisco
A woman that loves travel and good food writes this review. We picked up this book to get a feel for San Francisco before a business trip where I would be accompanying my husband and didn't want to be bored. I have the following comments about the book: PROS: 1. Small size, packed well 2. Nice job on the one day itineraries 3. Good summaries of the top 25 sights 4. Very useful ...

San Francisco: A Cultural and Literary History (Cities of the Imagination Series)2 reviews
Mick Sinclair

Interlink Publishing Group, 2003

an excellent book
I bought this book in preparation for a trip to San Francisco and it really helped me understand so much about the city, from the Gold Rush right up to the dotcom boom and crash. I especially liked the use of quotes from old sources that illustrate not just the past but the present as well. Overall, the book is very engaging and well written, I'd certainly recommend it for anyone seeking a deeper ...

Perhaps the best travel guide for California I've seen
It may seem a bit strange, but I am a californian and I have flipped through a great number of travel guides on california. It's a long story, but basically, I was trying to see what series were the best and most trustworthy, and what better way to test this than to see how accurate it is about places I know very well? Without a doubt, this one was the best of all of them. Occasionally it's ...

AAA Essential Guide: New York1 review
AAA, Mick Sinclair

AAA, 2000

Brief and helpful.
I used this book (an older edition) on my first trip to New York City and I found it very succinct and helpful. If you don't want lengthy descriptions and lots of historical background, this the book for you. It gets to the point about some of the "must sees" and "shouldn't miss", as well as warning you about some cultural differences. The Essential series is also great because it's thin and ...

Usa: The Rough Guide, Third Edition (3rd ed)13 reviews
Samantha Cook, Tim Perry, ...

Rough Guides, 1996

Excellent road trip bible, served this traveller well
The Rough Guide series has proven to be the best choice when traveling; this edition is no different. I recently completed a six week auto journey of the Western US--from South Dakota through California and finally back to my home in North Carolina. I couldn't have had a better guide to point me along on the journey. The information is honest and the attitude contemporary. The book covers the ...

Pictures and Words1 review
Roanne Bell, Mick Sinclair

Laurence King Publishing, 2005

not so hot
This is a reprint of an english book so the the artists are largely english. Although the page size is quite generous, the book often reprints multiple pages on each page and otherwise uses a lot of white space that reduces the impact of the book. McSweeney's Quarterly Concern Issue 13 is a much better sampler for about the same price.
