When Will I Read? (Welcome to First Grade!)
Miriam Cohen

A Young Yearling Book / Dell Publishing, 1993

First Grade Takes a Test9 reviews
Miriam Cohen, Lillian Cohen

Yearling, 1995

Totally relevant for ANY standardized test taking grade
I have to disagree with some of the comments made by other reviewers. This is a fabulous read aloud for intermediate and upper elementary students, as well as for their parents during Meet the Teacher night. With so much more pressure placed on students (and teachers!) as a result of NCLB, this book has a fabulous underlying message that goes beyond the unkindness of name calling - that kids ...

When Will I Read?1 review
Miriam Cohen

Yearling, 1996

Evidence of how we all learn at different times!
This is a very heartwarming book that allows students to see that we all "pick up" skills at different times. Being a first grade teacher, I know what it's like to see a child who becomes frustrated while watching everyone around them reading. This book speaks to the children that are waiting and watching everyone around them engage in the joy of reading. It provides them with the hope that ...

Behind the Walls2 reviews
Miriam Cohen

Feldheim, 2006

An excellent, excellent book
I read Behind the Walls over a weekend and I was absolutely enthralled and consumed with the story. Miriam Cohen has a gift for storytelling and I will gladly read any book she writes.

See You in Second Grade!2 reviews
Miriam Cohen, Lillian Hoban

Yearling, 1996

I remember reading this around 1st or 2nd grade
I loved the illustrations and I could relate to anna maria crying when her lunch and swimsuit got switched with her brothers gym clothes at home, and I could relate to the girl who was afraid to go in the water. Basically the class goes on a trip to the beach at the end of their first grade year and lots of fun stuff happens and they have a picnic and all.

Will I Have a Friend?3 reviews
Miriam Cohen

Star Bright Books, 2008

A classic that's still true today
For over thirty years, this book has answered one of a young child's most important questions about starting school: will I have any friends? Walking to school on the first day with his father, that's the question Jim asks. His father smiles down at him and says, "I think you will." Jim's a little intimidated at first. "All the boys were making noise. All the girls were laughing. ...

Down in the Subway2 reviews
Miriam Cohen

Star Bright Books, 2003

Down in the Subway
What a fun book to read. This book lends itself so well to a riveting read aloud. Add your own voice accent and song rhythm as you rollick your way through the subway scene that is so aptly captured. Fun for the reader, fun for the hearers!

First Grade Takes A Test/El examen de primer grado
Cohen Miriam

Starbright Books, 2008

This timely book, reissued with new art, goes right to the heart of the school testing issue. When the principal sends a lady to administer a test to the first grade class, the children find that none of the proffered answers are exactly right and they have trouble with the test. Fortunately, their teacher knows what is really important: being creative and being a good friend, positive traits that a standardized exam cannot test for. This is a ...

No Good in Art3 reviews
Miriam Cohen

Yearling, 1995

A middle school favorite, too
This delightful story has many connections for middle schoolers as well as younger students. The older set can very quickly relate to a teacher that has convinced him or her that (s)he "can't". It is a favorite and the students love the illustrations as well as the realistic dialogue. I use it often in class and at home; it is also a frequently requested, quick, but potoent read-a-loud. A ...

Miriam Cohen

When Will I Read?1 review
Miriam Cohen, Lillian Hoban

Yearling, 1987

Great book for teachers!
Miriam Cohen explores what it means to "be a reader" through her delightful class of first graders. Jim wonders when he will learn to read. His holistic teacher points out to him that he is already reading many things such as familiar books, classroom signs and so on. As young children enjoy reading (or listening) about Jim's exploration, they also are learning about reading and what it ...

A Daughter of Two Mothers1 review
Miriam Cohen

Feldheim Publishers, 2007

A must read
An excellent, well written book. Miriam Cohen draws her readers in with a story that makes that pages come alive. I read the book in two days as I was so caught up with the characters and the drama of Leichu. I am currently reading Cohen's book, "Behind The Walls" and I am enjoying it just as much. I gladly recommend "A Daughter of Two Mothers."
