I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly 17 reviews Mary Ann Hoberman
Little, Brown Young Readers, 1980
Wonderful children's book This book, based on the folk song, is delightful. It is imaginatively, whimsically, and humorously illustrated. There is an "Old Lady" rag doll that comes with all the creatures she swallows and can be placed in her mouth as the book is read. I bought both to give to a child as a gift.

A primary teacher's "must have" book I am an elementary school librarian and this book addresses one of the basic questions asked by Kinders and First Graders. I bought two for the library and our primary teachers are now ordering their own. Can't lose on this one.

Up, Down, and Around 2 reviews Katherine Ayres
Candlewick, 2008
Vegetable awareness, organic gardening, vegetarian fun! This book is great in so many ways. My 15 mo. old loves it because it has a fun rhythm to it and because he hunts for little things on each page (the kitty, the dog, the butterflies, the vegetables). I like it because it shows kids how plants grow "Corn grows up. Carrots grow down. Cucumbers climb around and around. Peppers grow up. Potatoes grow down. Pumpkins vine around and around...." I ...

There's a Hole in the Bucket
Scholastic Inc., 1990
From the back cover.... "Where is Henry going? To fetch some water, of course. There's just one small problem.... There's a hole in the bucket!" The Kirkus Reviews says, "A delightfully funny visual expansion of an appealing song. Westcott adds an audience of comically bemused creatures, the music, and a nifty conclusion. Good fun."

Miss Mary Mack: A Hand-Clapping Rhyme 14 reviews Mary Ann Hoberman
Little, Brown Young Readers, 2003
Bedtime Favorite My 2 1/2 year old daughter is in love with this hillarous illustrated book. We checked it out from the library and it has become her favorite. We read it two times before nap and again two times before bed. I even catch her reading to herself!I also like it because at the end of the book there are questions and ideas that focus on different areas such as rhyming. I know we will be purchasing this ...

Peanut Butter and Jelly: A Play Rhyme 4 reviews
Puffin, 1992
My five year old loves this book and can read it! I had to buy this book because my five year old daughter keeps checking it out of the library. When I told her she had to check out another book this week she said, "Why, Mom? This is a GREAT book!" That is definitely one to have on our shelf. The pictures are delightful and the repetitive phrasing makes it easy to read yet there are some tough words which she has mastered because she knows ...

Is There Room on the Feather Bed? (Orchard Paperbacks) 4 reviews Libba Moore Gray
Orchard Books (NY), 1999
Hilarious book with a great moral This story offers a wonderful way to teach children about the risks of passing judgments. A group of farm animals excludes a poor skunk until a good downpour and the lure of a warm, dry feather bed forces them to rethink their skunk stereotype. In the end, they realize they can all be friends. My 3-year-old daughter loves the rhyme (and a chance to yell, "skunk!"). The hilarious illustrations are ...

Down By the Bay (Raffi Songs to Read) 17 reviews
Crown Books for Young Readers, 1999
My 8 mo old daughter ADORES this book This classic, catchy, silly rhyme is so fun for kids - my infant daughter has loved this book since she was about 2 months old. She always smiles and is excited when we 'read' it and it is an obvious favorite of hers. You can read it - but of course part of the fun is singing it! In reading another person's comment that they didn't read this book to their child because they did not like to ...

The Care and Keeping of Friends (American Girl Library (Middleton, Wis.).) 13 reviews
American Girl, 1996
Great book for kids I got this book for my daughter for two reasons; one to help her inmpove her reading with something that interests her, and to make accesible to her readings that could help her develop better skills in order for her to become a well adjusted adult when she grows up. This book just satisfied both of my expectations. As soon as she received it, she went into her room and devoured it page by page. ...

The Best Vacation Ever (MathStart 2) 1 review Stuart J. Murphy
HarperTrophy, 1997
good at showing the concept of charts, but otherwise... ... I do not recommend this book. It's a good example of a seemingly "neutral" book about math is actually a powerful piece of propaganda. If you look at the storyline critically, it's absurd.
The family consists of a girl, her brother, mom and dad, and grandma. The girl is trying to determine where they should go on vacation, and she uses charts to organize data about the family members' ...

The Eensy-Weensy Spider 12 reviews Mary Ann Hoberman
Little, Brown Young Readers, 2004
This one will be a classic in your child's library. This book is one of my sons favorites. (17 months) The illustrations are great and the authors make a cute little day-long adventure for the eensy weensy spider. The book is actually pretty long so it works well for a bedtime story. I would also suggest "The Lady with the Alligator Purse" and "Miss Mary Mack" by the same two authors. All three of these books are illustrated from a unique ...
