The Canon: A Whirligig Tour of the Beautiful Basics of Science 74 reviews Natalie Angier
Mariner Books, 2008
A Fine Introduction To The Major Areas of Science Sometimes the best explainers of a topic are outsiders or laymen, rather than practitioners in the field. The author isn't a scientist so she can still see complex topics from the layman's viewpoint. This is, simply put, a great book. It covers not only the nuts and bolts of science (what is the doppler effect?) but the philosophy behind science: why the scientific method so excels at explaining ...

Natural Obsessions: The Search for the Oncogene 1 review Natalie Angier
Houghton Mifflin (T), 1988
Can't wait to buy the sequel... Ms. Angier has responded brilliantly to the criticism of Mike Wigler (one of the scientists featured in the book) and refrained from writing "a textbook". She has instead taken us into the world of hardcore biomedical research to see the people behind the scenes as they race to unlock the secrets of nature. Focusing on the events and people in the Weinberg lab at MIT during the early days of ...

Woman: An Intimate Geography 140 reviews Natalie Angier
Anchor, 2000
One of my favorites! I just love this book. It gives insight into the possible connections in our lives. Why is painful labor beneficial? Why do we have menopause and other animals do not?... I could go on and on. It provides great insight and a sense of womanly pride. I love science-based books that are not a bore. This is entertaining and I have a new perspective and appreciation for many things that make me ...

My God problem--and theirs.(The Scientific Method): An article from: American Scholar 1 review Natalie Angier
Phi Beta Kappa Society, 2004
A thought-provoking essay I guess the title of this article is a takeoff on Norman Podhoretz's February, 1963 Commentary article ("My Negro Problem - and Ours"). But let's not discuss that article. Let's discuss this one.
Natalie Angier (author of the interesting book, "Woman: An Intimate Geography") notes that when religion is used as a reason (or an excuse) to attack science, most scientists fight back. She ...

Natural Obsessions : Striving to Unlock the Deepest Secrets of the Cancer Cell 3 reviews Natalie Angier
Mariner Books, 1999
A book of enormous impact In my senior year of college, we were assigned Natural Obsessions for the relevance to oncology as a science. I had expected, as with all other undergraduate literature, to find only academic value in the book and approached it as such. But what unfolded instead was a journey through the strange and passionate world of research. It is what made me want to become an oncologist. The nature of the ...

The Full Body Project: Photographs by Leonard Nimoy 16 reviews
Five Ties Publishing, 2007
Good for Women of All Sizes Mr. Nimoy's treatment of his subjects was respectful and human. Something the rest of the country should try to emulate. I particulary liked the pictures he did that were inspired by Matisse, Raphael, and Herb Ritt. These show that art does not have to be thin to be beautiful.

The Best American Science Writing 2000 (Four Audiocassettes) 7 reviews James Gleick
HarperAudio, 2000
Terrific collection In general, the BEST collections are the best of the best. First, the essays or books have been chosen for publication and then a few are picked for the collection. These are well written and interesting, covering several areas of science. I especially liked Stephen S. Hall's "Journey to the Center of My Mind" where he describes his experience of an M.R.I. of his brain while being assigned ...

The Beauty of the Beastly: The New Views of the Nature of Life 6 reviews Natalie Angier
Little, Brown, 1995
A book that made me yelp with joy I am a noisy reader. I groan when I come across clumsy wordings or badly twisted sentences. I sigh when I am bored. I snort when I encounter assertions that are (in my view) outrageous. And occasionally, meeting up with prose that startles me with its elegance, vividness, and originality, I find myself uttering an involuntary yelp of sheer joy. Mind you, this doesn't happen very often. It doesn't ...
