Magic Universe: A Grand Tour of Modern Science1 review
Nigel Calder

Oxford University Press, USA, 2005

An exhilarating ride on the Merry-go-round of science
This is a remarkably interesting series of science essays (the author calls them 'short stories'). Even if I had not read the back of the book's dust jacket, I would have known that Nigel Calder was a former writer for the ebullient British weekly, "New Scientist." He's got their opinionated, breezy, clear style of writing. "Magic Universe" scintillates. It is easy to understand. The author ...

Nigel Calder's Cruising Handbook: A Compendium for Coastal and Offshore Sailors22 reviews
Nigel Calder

International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press, 2001

Gotta Get It!
My husband and I currently own a CS30 that we race and cruise on the Chesapeake Bay. We have been seriously considering moving up to a 37-40 ft cruiser. We bought this book (among several others) to prepare for cruising. It is fantastic. He covers every topic imaginable in an easy to digest format. It is a resource you don't want to be without!

Timescale2 reviews
NIGEL CALDER

RH Canada UK Dist, 1987

Timescale : An Atlas of the Fourth Dimension by Nigel Calder
copyright 1984 This book has three parts. The first part explains how scientists measure the ages of ancient objects that they observe, and how they correllate these measurements. The second part describes the big bang, using a time scale that increases exponentially. The third part, which is the bulk of the book, summarizes the events of all time, from the big bang up to 1980. Despite its ...

The Comet Is Coming: The Feverish Legacy of Mr. Halley1 review
Nigel Calder

Viking, 1980

One of the Classical Works on Comets
This work first came as a television programme script for the BBC in 1980. Then, it was published by the Viking Press, "The Comet Is Coming! The Feverish Legacy of Mr. Halley" was written by a British science writer, Nigel Calder. In this informative work, he examines the history, legends, and the science of comets, especially the Halley's Comet. Throughout this book, Calder also brings the ...

Nigel Calder

Mcgraw-Hill, 1991

Guides the sailor through the Northwest Carribean
Used this book extensively when we cruised the Caribbean and never had a reason to criticize any information. Entry and exit instructions were explict and correct. We did exactly as he recommended and had no problems. Direction for sailding from Cuba to Mexico were right on and tips about sailing down the Mexican coast were helpful. Belize info was great as was the info about Guatemala!

Einstein's Universe (Pelican)4 reviews
Nigel Calder

Penguin Books Ltd, 1982

E=mc˛ finally makes sense
For the first time I had the impression I could grasp some of the ideas behind the Relativity Theory. I had read a couple of books before this and did not go much further than understanding the principles of Doppler effect. But Calder's explanations and examples managed to give someone completely innocent of anything but the basics of Newton's gravitation laws some understanding of the ...

Magic Universe: The Oxford Guide to Modern Science5 reviews
Nigel Calder

Oxford University Press, USA, 2003

Amazing book
Almost all my free time during the past two weeks has been devoted to reading this extraordinary book. I thought that I would read just a selection of the (119) essays (over 700 pages!) on the cutting edge of science, but after reading two or three I was so enthralled that I turned to the beginning and read all the way through. Why? Simply because this is easily the most readable and ...

Nuclear Nightmares: An Investigation into Possible Wars1 review
Nigel Calder

Viking Adult, 1980

Enjoyable but decidedly controversial
Few people will likely read this book today, as it is firmly rooted in the cold war age. But I would still recomend it, as a peek into the mindset of many who lived through the nuclear terrors of the 1970's and 80's. Mr. Calder's book describes the nuclear state of the world around 1980, and how near we came to conflict. His writes well, and has no difficulty keeping the reader's attention. ...

Einstein's Universe13 reviews
Nigel Calder

Gramercy, 1988

The Universe Made Simple? Fascinating!
How does one go about taking our immense universe--with all its galaxies, quasars, neutron stars, etc.--and put it into words that a high school senior could understand? Not only that, but include all of Albert Einstein's mind boggling theories on the universe and still make it interesting to read? Ladies and gentleman, I give you Einstein's Universe. A book written by Nigel Calder. Mr. Calder ...

Refrigeration for Pleasure Boats: Installation, Maintenance and Repair6 reviews
Nigel Calder

International Marine Publishing, 1990

Not for Dummies, But Very Good Anyway
This book is a little on the technical side and is overdue for a revision, plus a good bit of the material covered is also covered in Mr. Calder's Mechanical & Electrical Manual, but not all of it. We get more detail here. If you want to become one with your refrigeration unit, this is the book for you. It'll help keep you in ice cubes no matter how hot the clime.

Giotto to the Comets1 review
Nigel Calder

Presswork, 1992

Very interesting mix of politics, science and space research
I've just finished this book. It is very enjoyable, and takes you through the politics involved in getting a European space mission off the ground. The author makes it all exciting as well (even now, many years after the mission which I remember from the television coverage), as he tells us the near-failures and last minute fixes which made the mission a success. The science of comets is also ...

Relativity: The Special and the General Theory (Penguin Classics)78 reviews
Albert Einstein

Penguin Classics, 2006

Worth the Effort - An Excellent Book
If you are interested in understanding the basic concepts of Relativity Theory, even if you have little mathematical background, then read this book. If you are a student or technical person that wants more of a "plain text" supplement to a technical course or presentation, then read this book. I read it many, many years ago when I was 14, and it had a profound effect on my outlook from that ...

Marine Diesel Engines: Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repair15 reviews
Nigel Calder

International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press, 1992

Top Flight Calder
The book gives you the tech you need, in terms you can understand. Calder is very impressive in his ability to impart knowledge to the layman. Don't however, assume this is just fluff overview, because it truly is the down and dirty of how it works and how to maintain it.

The Weather Machine2 reviews
Nigel Calder

Viking Adult, 1975

Overall a good introduction to climatology - several years ahead of its time
Nigel Calder's text provides a pretty good summary of Earth's weather systems and where they come from. It also does a good job of debunking the global "ice age" hysteria that was present in the news media at the time - and in the process it gives one insights into why the climate might be warming right now (hint - it's part of a natural process and it doesn't involve CO2). A classic - wish I ...

Cuba: A Cruising Guide1 review
Nigel Calder

Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson, 1999

Extremely useful cruising guide
Nigel's guide is THE cruising guide for Cuba. It provides very detailed instructions for entering all minor and major anchorages, harbors, cities, etc. We used it on our two month westbound cruise of the north coast this year, and found it invaluable. The only complaint I have is that he hasn't updated it in many years. Things change constantly, in terms of check in procedures, and where you ...

How to Read a Nautical Chart : A Complete Guide to the Symbols, Abbreviations, and Data Displayed on Nautical ...11 reviews
Nigel Calder

International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press, 2002

"What does 'rky' mean? Oops!"
Since the current U.S. Administration saw fit to cease publication of CHART NO. 1, the government's own guide to reading maritime maps, back in 2000 (maybe they figured Dubai might pick up the slack around our harbors), HOW TO READ A NAUTICAL CHART is an absolutely crucial educational volume for those of us new to reading charts. It's all here. Nigel Calder does a splendid job of taking the ...
