Great book for everyone!
Hip Hop Speaks to Children is a delightful and enlightening collection of poetry from various Poets, several performed by the authors themselves, on the included audio CD. With beautiful pictures depicting the poems and the contagious beat that the words pound out, this is a collection sure to capture the interest of all ages. Geared toward the 9 - 12 age group, this easily goes beyond that. As ...

Perfect for little girls
My little granddaughter(5) LOVES this book. She recently decided she likes poetry and this is her second favorite book. (Her first is 'My Feet Are Laughing'.) I would highly recommend it. It's a cute little story, with adorable pictures, about some little would-be divas getting all dressed up like the grown folks.

A beautiful collection from a hugely significant poet.
While reading through this wonderfully assembled collection of poetry, it is fascinating to encounter the wonderful historical context that appears throughout the works, constantly placing the reader in the "here and now" of when the poem was written. Because of this Giovanni has become a controversial figure but to simply focus on her earlier "angry work" is to oversimplify her career and have a ...

Author of Poetic Thoughts From the Heart of a Woman
This book was purchased for me by a very close friend who is no longer with us. I love the flexiblity of the poems as well as their many subject matters. Nikki has a way of writing to draw you right into what ever she's feeling, which is something that I admire greatly as a poet. Great reading, for those who are able to see and feel all avenues of love.

A wonderful "stand by" gift.
Anytime I order from Amazon, I throw one of these in my cart for a last minute new baby, birthday or teacher gift. It is a wonderfully diverse selection of poems, often read by the poets themselves. How cool is it to hear Robert Frost in a scratchy rendition of "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"? My 4th grader was thrilled when his class read a Janet Wong poem, and he could tell them ...
Lincoln and Douglass: An American Friendship

Our 16th president is known for many things: He delivered the Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. He was tall and skinny and notoriously stern-looking. And he also had some very strong ideas about abolishing slavery, ideas which brought him into close contact with another very visible public figure: Frederick Douglass. Douglass was born a slave but escaped in 1838 and became one of the central figures in the American ...

The Nikki I love
This is my favorite book of poems! It is filled with her militant black power poetry that is characterized by the era in which it was written. A must have for any Nikki fan or any poetry lover. Note: not for the sensitive reader

Disappointed
I don't understand how an author as accomplished as Nikki Giovanni could write such a clunker. The characters aren't compelling, the trial setting and court procedures are too dry and/or unfamiliar to be engaging for young readers and, with a few exceptions, the dialogue is pedestrian. Forty years ago Leo Lionni's endearing "Frederick" answered the important question of what value the artist ...

My first book of Poems!!!!!!!!!
My mother gave this book to me when I was 11 and it had a profound impact on my life. I have recited the EGO-Tripping poems more than I can remember. My greatest joy came when I heard Nikki Giovanni recite it in person. I would reccomend this book to any young African American boy or girl as an introduction to poetry, it is truly a work of art!!!!!!!!!!!!

A terrific, tender book
This book is a well-organized and convincing look at Grandmothers. Told through the voices of well-known authors, it is an engaging, funny, and poignant mix of fiction and personal experience. The role of Grandmother as both disciplinarian and comforter shines through brilliantly, serving to portray the women in all their complexity. There are many more essays and stories than poems, ...
