The long and winding road
Here's a fun way to determine whether or not a book will make for a good discussion in either a classroom or a bookclub. First, read the book. Two possible choices now lay before you. If you finish the title and find yourself 100% perfectly clear on why every character performed as they did, that is not a good book for discussion. If, however, you do as I did with "The Road To Paris" and ...

Yes We Can! An Empowring Children's Book That Teaches The Sign of the Times....
My kids have been fascinated with Barack Obama on TV. Now they can learn more about him (me too) while reading this excellently told, inspiring biography of the man who could very well be our next President. The book also does an excellent job of encouraging our children to strive for the best in life and to never get discouraged. I bought it for my kids & for all of my friends who have ...

The Absolutely Wonderful Meet Danitra Brown
As a teacher for many years I have read and shared hundreds of books with students. This one is exceptional. Last year, desperate to really reach my third grade, low-achieving, inner city students, I looked through some books that I had put away. MEET DANITRA BROWN was among them, but for some reason I never read it before that moment. I took it to school the next day, hoping the children ...

I love this series and book!
A Day with Daddy is a familiar story to many children. So many families today are split with one parent coming for visits with the child. I love how the Dad takes the child to do fun things and always spends quality time. A great book!

A princess dream come true
We have this golden book and it is one of my 3 year old daughter's favorite books to have read to her. It is the perfect length (not too long of a story, and not too condensed). The illustrations are also nice. I highly recommend this book and your princess should not be disappointed!

Beautiful!!!
This book was a good book. It went deep into the poet's soul. It also went deep into the poet's life. I am doing this for an English assignment. I wouldn't read this book because of what the cover looked like or unless I was told to do so. But after I read the first few chapters I was amazed at how judgment was wrong. Don't Judge a Book by its cover!!
A Pocketful of Poems
Nikki Grimes
Clarion Books

Tiana has a pocketful of words: green words like spring, night words like moon, and words with wings, like angel. Each word is the inspiration for a pair of poems—one, lyrical free verse and the other, haiku. The paired poems reflect Tiana's lively spirit and urban outlook and are showcased in Javaka Steptoe's inventive collages, which include a wide range of materials, from faucet handles to pumpkin seeds to a hand-sculpted, gilded alphabet. ...

A story of true courage and triumph.
Meet Elizabeth Coleman--the first African American woman to fly a plane. Coleman's story is told in a series of "interviews" starting from her childhood right up to her death. Her family talks about her education, her determination, and her unfailing dream to be more than just a field hand. Reporters talk about her as a pilot, and friends and fans talk about her courage and determination. In ...

C is for City. That's good enough for me.
C is for city. Which is to say, New York City. At least that's the impression you'll receive after reading Nikki Grimes's eclectic alphabet book. Picture books have learned something that Sesame Street knew years ago. Mainly, that kids dig cityscapes filled with letters and numbers. As a result, "C Is For City" is a metropolitan dive into the beauty and excitement of the New York City ...

A Wonderful Book to Teach Kids to Pray
When Daddy Prays is a collection of poems and verses to help a child to learn about prayer. The book tells about a child learns just that from his father. The same as we learn from our Heavenly Father. The Father's prayers help carry the family throughout each day. No matter what the situations or circumstances prayer brings them closer. I recommend this to any parent, Christian or ...

The Wild, Wild Hair
A positive, self-affirming book for every little African-American girl with the incredibily impossible but beautiful, curly, long, tangled and naturally textured hair that occurs only in youth, and before all the chemical treatments we subject our beautiful hair to as we get older. Mothers and daughters will relate to this simply rhymed, easily read and enjoyable book. Sure to become a ...

It's bad enough that Xavier's new stepbrother, Chris, has moved into Xavier's room, but now it looks like he's also trying to steal Mami by being the perfect kid. Chris's "Mr. Perfect" act may fool grown-ups, but Xavier can see straight through it. He promises himself that he'll never become real brothers with such a fake. No brothers allowed! Ever! . . . right? In twenty powerful poems, two strangers learn to become ...

Excellent
This book is wonderful. In a time when many boys do not have strong male role models, this book gives a wonderful example of a man mentoring a boy who needs him. The book is full of poetry, and beautiful illustrations. It teaches wonderful values, and is a must for any family. Excellent!

Nice poems for elementary age kids
My 9 year old doesn't read poetry on his own, but likes the poems read to him from this book. He can identify with some of the age related feelings about school and friendship played out with Danitra and her friend. Funny and easy going.
