Absolutely Beautiful!
The Irish File is the strikingly beautiful photographic works of Jon Michael Riley. Riley lives in North Carolina has done award winning works for numerous magazines and other publications. The photographs are so absolutely beautiful it gives the viewer a sense of a Victorian era painting. ...

My Dream of You3 reviews
Nuala O'Faolain

Penguin Books Ltd, 2002

A COMPASSIONATE CHRONICLE OF A STILL PRESENT PAST
Part shocking history, part sexual odyssey, all lyrical prose, Dublin journalist Nuala O'Faolain's first fiction is stunning as she interweaves past and present in parallel stories of two women seeking fulfillment. Ms. O'Faolain's bestselling memoir, "Are You Somebody?," won accolades for its utter honesty and brilliant craftsmanship. These attributes shine as brightly in "My Dream Of You." ...

A Wonderfully Grand Read!!
If you like Dickensian characters, brilliant writing, smart and sympathetic situations, etc., visiting other countries via reading, this is a must read. It, along with Pat Conroy's literature, is one of my all time favorites. It's an absolute keeper -- there are not enough stars to rate this book appropriately! Buy it, relish it...

The Story of Chicago May
I was disappointed in the book. It had more biography of the author than the subject.

The Story of Chicago May1 review
Nuala O'Faolain

so disappointed
I had heard so much about this author and was really looking forward to this book, particularly as i had just finished Devil in the White City which covered the same time period. I barely made it through the first 30 pages and gave up. I felt she spent too much time dwelling on her own thoughts and feelings about her subject and not enough telling the story of Chicago May.

When History and Memoir Mix
Like some of the previous reviewers, I was annoyed and bewildered after the initial reading of this book. Not because it wasn't well-written. It is. But the intermingling of the author's experiences and what she perceives May Duignan-Churchill to have felt/experienced was disorienting because I thought I was buying a biography of Chicago May. Most historical biographies are devoid of personal ...

Are You Somebody: The Life and Times of Nuala O'Faolain2 reviews
Nuala O'Faolain

New Island Books, 1997

insightful
I thoroughly enjoyed Nuola O'Faolain's memoir. My family is Irish. Many of her recollections regarding her family, her childhood, and her Catholic boarding school are similar to those of my mother's. Anyone who loves modern Irish literature and culture should read this book. She is brutally honest about her life. This book is not a sweet Irish memoir, nor is it Angela's Ashes.

Almost There20 reviews
Nuala O'Faolain

Riverhead Hardcover, 2003

Redemption
I love this book. While her first, Are you Somebody, was so full of darkness, this is full of hope. It is a book about redemption. She is not there yet, but almost there. She writes BEAUTIFULLY. A real wordsmith. The way she writes alone makes it worthwhile. I am in my 30s and male, and I found that I could relate to the themes she raises. They really are universal.

Are You Somebody81 reviews
Nuala O'Faolain

Books on Tape, 1999

the struggle to overcome pain, find love and meaningful work
This is a splendidly written autobiography, unbelievably rich in detail and raw emotion. While other reviewers have ably described her life's journey - from a chaotic household with alcoholic parents to a very good job as TV producer and then columnist - this is also a beautiful and vivid evocation of a changing Ireland. O'Faolain provides the grittiest of portraits, of a stalled society that ...
