Missing Messy Bessey
For our not quite 2 year old, this is the book of passion. After she picked it out in the local library we have probably read this 100 times in the past week. Now if we can ever get it out of her hands to return it.... I guess the only way to do it is to find a new one!! Thanks Amazon

Beautiful Story
This has become my favorite children's book! I bought it for my "almost" three yr old son and he was captivated by the story and the beautiful pictures. Flossie is so innocently sly! She will not be out-witted by some ol' fox! The idea that this regal creature is being insulted by a mere child is absurd to him, yet he can't get past his own ego to see he is being out-foxed! I adored everything ...

The Honest-To-Goodness Truth
Terrific book and a great read-aloud! I read this book to my elementary class. The children loved it! It provided a wonderful "spring board" for a rich classroom discussion on truthfulness.

You are very rich if you have one good friend.
I enjoyed Patricia Mckissack & James Carville's lovely story set in the Lousiana Depression-era about a little girl hearing lots of talk about hardtimes with people out of work, no jobs and about her adventures in the swamp meeting up with a real swamp ghost, or so it seems at first. Little Lu shows her big caring heart when she be friends the ghost only to find out he's a little orphan boy. It ...

Special all right
Growing up in Nashville, Tennessee in the 1950s was not easy for African-American children. Most public places--including hotels, restaurants, churches, movie theaters, parks--were open only to whites. On buses, only seats in the back rows were available to them, even if the front of the bus was empty. But as the author explains in her endnote, the board of Nashville's public library in the ...

I love this book as much as my young son!!!
I can't really put into words how much this book has meant to me as an African American Christian parent. Simultaneously, I'm educating my six year old son about great Bible stories and the plight of our ancestors. Further, we tend to get lost in both worlds while reading this astonishing book. All I can say to the authors is: Please give us more! This book is a work of art, history and ...

The Truth about the End of Slavery
While the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation is often thought of as the end of slavery in the United States, the truth is that slaves were freed at different times over the course of several years. The day that slaves were told of their freedom was called their day of Jubilee. Starting with information related to blacks' roles during the American Revolution and working chronologically ...

Despite your fears, this book is pure gold
This book describes the customs, recipes, poems, and songs used to celebrate Christmas in the big plantation houses and in the slave quarters just before the Civil War. I was filled with great trepidation after seeing the cover of this book. It was a relief to me to find that, fortunately, the text was respectful and historically accurate. But observe, as I did, this cover. We know, after ...

Mama's Window
Mama's Window, Lynn Rubright's touching coming-of-age tale, takes place in a Mississippi Delta swamp. The story concerns Sugar, an eleven-year-old boy. After his mother dies, Sugar moves in with his gruff Uncle Free. At first, Sugar fears the swamp and doesn't like his uncle or the life of a fisherman. But by the end of the novel, Sugar has come to appreciate the swamp and to love his uncle. ...

A compelling read about segregation and prejudice
"Color Me Dark" is one of the most compelling books in the Dear America series. It centers around protagonist Nellie Lee Love, an 11-year-old African American girl living in a town in Tennessee at the end of WW I. This is the era of segregation and when one of Nellie's uncles dies under questionable circumstances [a victim of hate crime], Nellie's dad decides to move the family north to Chicago ...

Miami is so adorable!!!
I am a high school English teacher and I would love to have Miami as a student. As a parent I did shared reading of the Miami series with my then six-year old son(who is now seven) and he loves Miami and his best friend String. Miami's character is stubborn, hardheaded, honest and witty. He has a love/hate relationship with school, which seems typical for most boys. Miami faces typical third/fourth ...

Terrific early reader book
Having just learned of this book while looking at an older age group of books,...I've found something worth buying for my brand new niece. Here the writer helps the child find out about all different kinds of bugs without getting into any detail (of course, for that age group...) and where they can be found and shows an observing nature,...not something where the child will be thinking of ...

Slave History Revealed
A wonderful companion book to history textbooks. Having scanned several history texts to find pertinent and relevant facts concerning the history of slave revolt to no avail, this book was a real "find". The book contains several historical photographs and drawings which aids and assists the student's imagination. The chapters depict leaders of the slave revolt, their lives, their ...
