The Titillation of the Times
In the 1840s, New Yorkers didn't have _Hustler_ or _Screw_ magazine, but they didn't go without their titillation in print. They could get to the newsstand and buy _The Flash_, _The Rake_, _The Whip_, or _The Libertine_, and get a dash of bold, provocative, and spicy prose, with saucy pictures. The papers are long gone, and would have been forgotten ephemera had not a treasure trove of them ...

Whodunit?! The O. J. Simpson trial of the 19th century
We shouldn't like murder mysteries, but we usually do. While there's a real tragedy going on -- someone killed, families in disarray, a killer on trial -- we hang on for the gory details. Folks were no different in New York City in 1836, which is the setting for the real life, true story of the murder of Helen Jewett, a lady of negotiable virtue, who plied her trade at an upscale brothel. ...

The American Promise: A History of the United States, Combined Version (Volumes I & II)3 reviews
James L. Roark, Michael P. Johnson, ...

Bedford/St. Martin's, 2008

Narative Textbook
Although "Roark seems to emphasize some events that seem less important to U. S. History" as Mr. Jack A. White stated, this book is written in the narrative stand point. Therefore, it should be read more like a story and not a textbook. If you're using this book in high school, it will be good practice since more college books are narrative.

Outstanding edition! Excelent job!
The reading structure allow the reader to visualize and understand American History from outside and inside. Wonderful maps, statistical charts, great photos, and a very good section titled: historical question. If you are the type of person in exploring new perspectives of the American History, do not hesitate to look this book.

Comprehensive History 1 Textbook
I really like this textbook because it presents the material in a way that I can easily grasp and remember. Past history books have bored me, but this one isn't too bad :) It's also great that it's in paperback because that makes it cheaper!

good summaries of many key events and trends

It covers a time when the US struggled to patch itself together after the Civil War, to its emergence as a global power by 1900. And thence into intervening crucially and decisively in two world wars. Plus the protracted struggle of the Cold War. What this means, for example, is ...
