Facing the Tank3 reviews
Patrick Gale

Plume, 1990

Loved it
This is a truly magical, hotchpotch little story. Smooth as silk tho. The schoolboy who thinks he has fathered a litter of puppies is the cutest thing ya ever want to hear. And PW and LJ forget to mention the Bishop removing the wings from the skeletal remains of the local saint who's to be disinterred. Mr. Gale's writing is magical. Delightful. Funny.

Notes from an Exhibition1 review
Patrick Gale

Harper Collins Publ. UK, 2008

Sympathetic Storyteller
Britain's "most successful openly gay author" (this from OutUK.com) has written a book that has little to say about gayness, much to say about the impact of mental illness on a family, something to say about religion and its consolations, and much to say about sibling relationships. The book is artfully constructed, told through several voices. Gale portrays Rachel Kelly, an artist with four ...

Tree Surgery for Beginners5 reviews
Patrick Gale

Faber & Faber, 1998

Emotionally satisfying and endearing
Patrick Gale has written yet another fine book full of believable characters and unpredictable plots. I have read all of his books and found them to be consistently well written, entertaining, and thought-provoking. This book delves into the infinite complexities of human relationships but does not become ponderous. His sudden and eccentric plot twists keep the reader stimulated and guessing. ...

The Aerodynamics of Pork3 reviews
Patrick GALE

Abacus/ Sphere Books, 1986

Two artists find love in Cornwall
Two interrelated stories run in parallel, one set in London and quickly moving to Cornwall, the other remaining in London. The Cornwall part concerns the Peake family as they prepare for an annual music festival. The Peake Family includes talented violinist, 15 coming on 16 year old Seth Peake, his older sister Venitia with an ever expanding waist, and their liberal minded mother Evelyn. In ...

Scarlet Boy
Tom Wakefield, Patrick Gale

Serpent's Tail, 1999

Young Edward will stop at nothing in his single-minded pursuit of romance and stardom. Harsh reality, and his sharp-tongued mother, however, have a way of pricking his glorious balloon. A sequel to Forties' Child, The Scarlet Boy is a moving coming-of-age novel set in an English mining community. Left incomplete at Wakefield's death, it has been lovingly completed by his friend, Patrick Gale. The Scarlet Boy is a fitting tribute to one of ...

A Sweet Obscurity2 reviews
Patrick Gale

HarperPerennial, 2004

"A verse of softer pleasures and a sweet obscurity"
When reading Patrick Gale, one always gets a warm, calm, fuzzy feeling. His novels conjure visions of fireside chats on cold winter evenings, and the affectionate bliss of domestic life. A Sweet Obscurity, although not his best work, certainly invokes such images, while also presenting a rather dark, but hopeful look at modern, untypical relationships and families. Like its predecessor, Rough ...

Rough Music (Ballantine Reader's Circle)9 reviews
Patrick Gale

Ballantine Books, 2002

Simply Brilliant!
As an avid reader of fiction, I expected very little from this casual purchase, but not since Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay" have I been so captivated by both the story and style of a modern novel. The reviews below give you all (and unfortunately in once case, too much) of the detail of the story. But Gale dissects the British version of the 'American Beauty' family ...

Changing Governance of Local Economies: Responses of European Local Production Systems
Colin Crouch, Patrick Le Gales, ...

Oxford University Press, USA, 2004

This book examines patterns of economic governance in three specific, contrasting, contexts: machinery-producing districts; declining steel cities; and clusters of high-technology activities. Building on the work of their previous book (Local Production Systems in Europe: Rise or Demise? European Cities (European Societies)
Patrick Le Gales

Oxford University Press, USA, 2002

European cities are on the rise, taking advantage of the opportunities of the European integration and globalization processes. But they also face economic changes, social inequalities, poverty, and a new set of constraints. Taking examples through the European Union, the new book shows the impact of the transformation of the nation states on cities and the change of local societies and local governments. It argues that new modes of urban ...

Kansas in August1 review
Patrick Gale

Plume, 1989

A TEASER only 160 pages
A quirky too short story about a brother (gay) and sister (straight) who unwittingly share a lover. The lover doesn't know it either and he's trying to sort out his feelings for each. That part is well done. But then the brother finds and takes in an infant abandoned in the subway on a freezing cold snowy midnight, screaming it's little lungs out. Oh how anyone can do that I'll never know, for ...

Ease
Patrick Gale

Plume, 1989

A novel about downsizing from a life of ease and upgrading to one of sleaze. Many people would kill to be Domina Tey.
