When Survivors Give Birth: Understanding and Healing the Effects of Early Sexual Abuse on Childbearing Women3 reviews
Penny Simkin

Classic Day Publishing, 2004

Great Insight/Tool
I found this book to be a great tool to add to my base of knowledge. As a CBE,Doula I come across women that have had previous abuse issues. This book gives you the awareness to handle (not treat) these issues in a sensitive way. It has different sections for Midwives,Doulas,CBE'S, ETC. I found it worth adding to the reference library.

The Simple Guide to Having a Baby: A Step-by-Step Illustrated Guide to Pregnancy & Childbirth1 review
Penny Simkin, Janet Whalley, ...

Meadowbrook, 2005

SIMPLE is the key word here
This book is hilarious, it's like it was written for five year olds who got pregnant somehow and don't know anything about the female reproductive system. Check out this quote from page three. "The uterus (sometimes called the womb) is a bag made of thick muscles. It is located in the pelvis behind the bladder (where urine or pee collects) and in front of the rectum (where your poop comes ...

Episiotomy and the Second Stage of Labor2 reviews
Penny Simkin

Pennypress, 1984

An excellent resource to share with your OB
Episiotomy and the Second Stage of Labor is an excellent resource to bring to a prenatal visit & share with your doctor (if you have chosen a Midwife for a birth attendant, she has already read it!). The nature of the presentation (technical) is ideally suited to a modern MD's evidence-based education style & they will appreciate all the publication/study references. After reading the rationalles ...

The Labor Progress Handbook: Early Interventions to Prevent and Treat Dystocia10 reviews
Penny Simkin, Ruth S. Ancheta

Blackwell Publishers, 2000

A must for all birth professionals!
It's clear that the book is writen for professionals because of the jargon, and in my opinion every professional should read it! I am on my way to become a doula and unfortunately this book is not on the required reading list, I think it should be. It is an important tool for when labor doesn't progress 'as it should', and offers options and ideas to try before the drugs and machines are ...

Pregnancy Childbirth and the Newborn: The Complete Guide48 reviews
Penny Simkin, Janet Whalley, ...

Meadowbrook Press, 2003

THE Pregnancy book
After starting "what to expect" and being told that it was horrible I was given this book by my midwives. It is THE book every pregnant woman should read. It does cover pregancy but not all the scare tactics that you read in the other books that make you paranoid about breathing. I found it very helpful in creating a birthing plan and knowing all the options I had. I didn't have the pregnancy ...

The Birth Partner, Third Edition: A Complete Guide to Childbirth for Dads, Doulas, and All Other Labor ...6 reviews
Penny Simkin

Harvard Common Press, 2007

A great guide!
The biggest fear about being pregnant is the fear of giving birth, I think. So, when I was looking for a book to read on this, I wanted something that would include all elements of the delivery room process. This book does that and more! It was great for my husband, who now knows what to expect and to do. A high recommend, along with You Know You're Pregnant When. Reflections on the Longest Nine ...
