The Boy Who Cried Fabulous4 reviews
Lesléa Newman

Tricycle Press, 2007

What a Fabulous Book!
This story is so enjoyable for both the reader and the listener! Parents will relate to the boy in the book who wastes time and is constantly late for everything and children will love the rhyme of the story and the repetitious use of the word "fabulous". The old-fashioned illustrations are charming and this is definitely a book my 4 year old and I will be reading for some time.

The Science of Paintings
Richard Newman, W. Stanley Taft

Springer, 2001

One's appreciation of a beautiful painting is enhanced by knowing about the aesthetic choices the artist made in composition and execution of the painting. It is also enhanced by knowing how the artist's selection and use of materials - and their interplay with light - affects what we see in the painting. This book discusses the physics and materials science that go into making a painting appear the way it does: the physical principles behind ...

Sustainability and Cities: Overcoming Automobile Dependence5 reviews
Peter Newman, Jeffrey Kenworthy

Island Press, 1999

Gridlock and bypasses are not the only options.
In "The Life and Death of Great American Cities" written in the 1960s Jane Jacobs embraced complexity as a goal in itself. "How" she asked "can cities generate enough mixture among uses, enough diversity throughout enough of their territories, to sustain their own civilisation?" For Newman and Kenworthy the key idea is sustainability - "one of the most diversely applied concepts among ...

Caesars of the Wilderness: Company of Adventurers, Volume 2 (Newman, Peter Charles//Company of Adventurers)3 reviews
Peter C. Newman

Viking Adult, 1987

An exciting story of adventure, exploration and human folly.
This is the unvarnished history of the Hudsons Bay Company. Extremely well researched and a pleasure to read this is the story of the founding of the company that opened up Canada and the Artic to trade. Filled with stories of exploration, adventure, hard headed business and hardship on the frontier. This isn't just the story of the founders, but the nuts and bolts of survival at the ...

Cities as Sustainable Ecosystems: Principles and Practices
Peter Newman, Isabella Jennings

Island Press, 2008

Modern city dwellers are largely detached from the environmental effects of their daily lives. The sources of the water they drink, the food they eat, and the energy they consume are all but invisible, often coming from other continents, and their waste ends up in places beyond their city boundaries. Cities as Sustainable Ecosystems shows how cities and their residents can begin to reintegrate into their bioregional environment, and how ...

The New Palgrave: A Dictionary of Economics: Four Volume Boxed Set1 review

Palgrave Macmillan, 1987

Where is my Palgrave Dictionary of Economics????
I'm soooo looking forward to getting this terrific Economics Dictionary/Encyclopedia. Wonder what's taking the publisher so long to get it out? Price is about one-third what the original cost. I thought of getting that original one back in graduate school (Ohio State University). But now the softbound will do just fine, as a welcome addition to my library. Ohhh, Palgrave, where ***are*** ...

Empire of the Bay: The Company of Adventurers that Seized a Continent11 reviews
Peter C. Newman

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2000

Prince Rupert's Men
This is a splendid account of the three hundred and fifty year institution that is Hudson's Bay Company, and even incorporates a number of chapters that chronicle its great rival, the North West Company. Newman traces the origins of the Hudson's Bay Company back to those great explorers Raddison and Groseilliers, Frenchmen sponsored by the English, and then traces it through the many eras of ...

Resilient Cities: Responding to Peak Oil and Climate Change
Peter Newman, Timothy Beatley, ...

Half of the world’s inhabitants now live in cities. In the next twenty years, the number of urban dwellers will swell to an estimated five billion people. But our planet is rapidly running out of the carbon-based fuels that ...

Cursed in the Blood13 reviews
Sharan Newman

Books on Tape, Inc., 2000

How did Edgar turn out so nice?
After meeting Catherine's eccentric family, we finally get to see where Edgar came from. All I can figure is that he indeed was the changling - because he's far too normal to be part of that motley band. Edgar, Catherine, baby James, Soloman (one of my favorites - we need to find him a nice Jewish girl!), and servant Willa travel to Scotland. Edgar has been summoned to help avenge the deaths of ...

Bronfman Dynasty1 review
Peter C. Newman

McClelland & Stewart, 1978

Pre-Enron Integrity
I loved this book because it had soul, heart and wisdom. Sam Bronfman was an immigrant that took advatage of what NA and in this case Canada had to offer. From selling frozen fish and firewood he "made" one of the largest corporations in the world and had fun doing it. "It's not the money, he said, it's the making of the money". The game, the fun. "The best thing ever invented is compound ...
