The Just War: An American Reflection on the Morality of War in Our Time5 reviews
Peter S. Temes

Ivan R. Dee, Publisher, 2003

Thoughtful and helpful
I have read several books in the last week on Just War theory, and this was the best by far. Temes seeks to employ an evolutionary understanding of the Just War Theory to explain where it came from and where it stands today. Then, Temes offers his ethical insights on Just War criteria, adding his own fingerprint to the philosophy. Finally, Temes uses these criteria and applies them to the ...

One School Now: Real Life at Lynn English School (Counterpoints (New York, N.Y.), Vol. 52.)1 review
Peter S. Temes

Peter Lang Publishing, 1998

Response to Lynn English Student
Peter Temes checking in here. I'm sorry to see the anger in the review posted by the student at Lynn English. I'm glad that he acknowledges that he has not read the book yet -- he says things about it that are simply untrue. Once he has the chance to read it, I trust that he'll see a nuanced view of his school, the good with the bad, and a great deal of respect paid to his fellow students and ...

Against School Reform (And in Praise of Great Teaching)2 reviews
Peter S. Temes

Ivan R. Dee, Publisher, 2003

The difference is the teachers. Duh!!
Temes' central thesis is that nothing succeeds with any kind of student, from the most brilliant to the slowest, like devoted and intelligent teachers. It isn't the curriculum, it isn't how many hours of sex ed they get, it isn't the standardized tests. It's the amount of time and effort the teacher spends working to inspire young minds. Not surprisingly, a top-down approach "designed by ...

The Power of Purpose: Living Well by Doing Good1 review
Peter S. Temes

Three Rivers Press, 2007

A Simple but Powerful Approach
Finding our purpose in life is an important goal and priority. Not just because it's something nice to do, but also because much of our health, wellness and success depends upon it. This is one of a growing group of books showing that the dog-eat-dog mentality that has typified many inter-personal relationshps and business ventures is neither necessary nor desirable. Competition is certainly ...

Teaching Leadership: Essays in Theory and Practice (American University Studies Series XIV, Education)1 review

Peter Lang Publishing, 1997

An excellent and very interesting collection of opinions.
I found this to be an excellent book, especially for college students interested in Leadership. The authors take a thoughtful and critical look at the field from a variety of different perspectives. The field of Leadership studies needs more academic rigor and more books like this one.
