Psychology and Life (MyPsychLab Series)10 reviews
Richard J. Gerrig, Philip G. Zimbardo

Allyn & Bacon, 2007

Very compelling
The authors' use of case studies and real-life examples makes this more than a textbook -- and much more readable than one. I found myself excited about reading each chapter. And I know I'll be looking up things in it in the future. My only quibble is that I found many copyediting errors that I hope the publisher will fix for future editions.

The Lucifer Effect: Understanding How Good People Turn Evil55 reviews
Philip Zimbardo

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2008

An important book of our time.
First let me disclaim that there was a section of the book I did not read because it was incorrectly bound -- it went from page 426 to page 375, but the new p. 375 was different from the one that had preceded it. [I'm guessing that the reason Amazon is out of stock while the book enjoys top 10 status is because they are trying to restock with "good" copies] Nonetheless, this book is so rich ...

Shyness: What It Is, What To Do About It15 reviews
Philip G. Zimbardo

Da Capo Press, 1990

Of course it's dated. All classics are. It is nevertheless timeless.
Zimbardo opens his book by stating that shyness is "a universal experience" (page 14, paperback 6th ed. 1978), that nearly 80% of those polled said they had been shy at some point in their lives, half of whom had overcome it. He establishing a range of shyness from, on one end of the range a tendency toward introversion, to mid-range shyness of situational awkwardness and feeling intimidated, to ...

The Time Paradox: The New Psychology of Time That Will Change Your Life
Philip Zimbardo, John Boyd

Free Press, 2008

Your every significant choice -- every important decision you make -- is determined by a force operating deep inside your mind: your perspective on time -- your internal, personal time zone. This is the most influential force in your life, yet you are virtually unaware of it. Once you become aware of your personal time zone, you can begin to see and manage your life in exciting new ways. In The Time Paradox, Drs. Zimbardo and Boyd draw on ...

The Psychology of Attitude Change and Social Influence1 review
Philip G Zimbardo, Michael R Leippe, ...

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 1991

A Good Book
This is a good book, but I like Cialdini's "Influence" better. It is more practical.

Psychology of Terrorism

Oxford University Press, USA, 2006

During the past decade, we have witnessed a dramatic transformation in the nature and uses of terrorism. In the 70s, it was often repeated that terrorists "want a lot of people watching, not a lot of people dead"; today, it is more accurate to say that terrorists want a lot of people dead, and even more people crippled by fear and grief. A major strategic intent of modern terrorists is to use larger scale physical attacks to cause stress in the ...

The Shy Child : Overcoming and Preventing Shyness from Infancy to Adulthood9 reviews
Philip G. Zimbardo, Shirley L. Radl

Malor Books, 1999

Zimbardo's Shy Child is the ONLY book you need
Professor Philip Zimbardo has done it again! His The Shy Child offers great ideas and insight into shyness and its origins. He analyzes the development and shyness and its effects on youth. It is a great tool for parents and anyone interested in discovering how shyness affets children. I can't imagine an easier to read book that is chock full of the details Zimbardo has placed in this one. ...

The Lucifer Effect Understanding How Good People Turn Evil
Philip Zimbardo

Random House, 2007

"The Lucifer Effect raises a fundamental question about the nature of human nature: How is it possible for ordinary, average, even good people to become perpetrators of evil? In trying to understand unusual, or aberrant behavior, we often err in focusing exclusively on the inner determinants of genes, personality, and character, as we also tend to ignore what may be the critical catalyst for behavior change in the external Situation or in the ...

Violence Workers: Police Torturers and Murderers Reconstruct Brazilian Atrocities3 reviews
Martha Knisely Huggins, Mika Haritos-Fatouros, ...

University of California Press, 2002

Police Torturers Examined
An outstanding book, that took courage to put together-- telling with credibility and compassion about the torture to which the Brazilian police & military subjected citizens whom they saw as on the "wrong" side politically. The authors bring to light an evil we thought went out of fashion with the Inquisition -- but here it is again in the 20th century. They make it clear that the propensity to ...
